    Hi Azeem,
You really want me to pull this? At least it's inside out of the wind.
I could not detect any play in the pinion bearings, there is in the rear U joint. I could not get any play in the wheel bearings, the brake shoes are nice and dry, so is the pinion shaft. I could not get the cover off, 4 bolts came out easy the rest are going to need some WD40 or to be warmed with a torch. I snapped the top center bolt off. Price is firm, delivery not included. It's too bloody cold and this is not going to be fun to remove.
    thanks Bruce

So I convinced my freind to drive down and actually see the damage and im glad we did. Got some pictures.

First off, it was about -30*C with the windchill today (~ -20*F) so was not a good day to be outside. The car has been at the shop now for a couple weeks, and granted its the holidays but the mechanic just flat out lied. The car is being picked up ASAP, not sure where its going just yet though.

When we got there, the car had not even moved an inch from where the truck dropped it off. Snow everywhere, and a grass patch under the car were sort of a hint.

Next we decided to pull off the cover, and the bolts hadnt been touched, nor the seal cracked. The diff was completely full of fluid. Not sure how you get a "grenaded" diagnosis without taking the diff cover off.

So after seeing the rear end we were going to pick up a 72 rear end with a very clean housing, and i have a Posi center section i was going to donate to the repair. However, the seller said the last guy who bought it returned it cuz it was an 8.2 center section? huh?

Is it possible to put an 8.2 center in an 8.5 housing? Or an 8.5 center into an 8.2 housing?

Anyway, im glad we opened that one too, because it had three random teeth sheared off of the ring. So we left it.

After seeing these pictures were thinking about just taking it to a shop who knows what they are doing and just replace the one axle (if it needs it) and the bearing and put it back to how it was.

Jim what do you think? Can you tell if its a C-clip or a bolt in axle just from the pictures?

Hey Azeem how you making out on this. I wanted to know if your repairing the unit yourself or taking it to a shop? I'm going to change the 8.2 in my LeSabre and want to know how difficult setting up the gears are.
    thanks Bruce

We'll be taking it to a shop for sure.

Im not skilled enough to set up the gears, but aparently its not too difficult. Im just not terribly confident about the reading the paint patterns.

We trailored the car to a shop who knows what they are doing. The shop it was at changed their story from "grenaded" to "twisted axle tube".

Its at Malmberg Truck center right now. These guys fix semi trucks for guys who breakdown on the road and their livelyhood depends on timeline, so if they cant find something they can make it.

That being said we may have also scored a 69 olds open 10bolt. IF all else fails we'll look at using that.

Everything sorta up in the air right now with holidays and shops being shut down or slowed down.

Be careful about that. A 68 and up rear axle is 1 1/2" longer from flange to flange than a 67 rear.

Noted, it shouldnt be a problem.

The control arms bolt up,and possibly a driveshaft length adjustment.

its a 330 with the high compression. Its a quick little thing but i dont trust anything that shop told us.

When we got there to pick it up the first thing they said to us was, "Can we help you load it?" while danglling the keys in front of us.

Guess they were tryin to tell us they didnt want to work on it. We'll find out what the damage in a few days when the guy at the truck center comes back to work.
