Is this car a real GSX or just a GS with a mistaken identity? And whats the name of that paint color? I think I want to paint my 65 that color. ________ Head Shop
I think that color is called Lime Mist. Might be a real GSX, looks very similar to this one; http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10684
Rotting? Around these parts, that's a "driver" Look at the bumper chrome! Yeah, the '71s had different hood grilles than the '70 and '72, but those are the correct ones, looks like. I dislike the color, but you could get a wide variety of colors on a GSX in '71. I'm unsure if the VIN denotes a GSX, I have little experience with them because of their rariety. I suppose that the sequence # and plant code could be hints as to the likelihood of this car being the real McCoy or not. Ask for the VIN, can't hurt.
I thought the GSX was only available in Yellow or White, but maybe that was only 1970. The grill certainly looks like a '71, but again, I know the '70 had GSX on the grill. In certain lighting, the yellow can look a little green. I don't see the hood tach, but it could just be missing. Also, the induction scoops look a little different. It's definitely worth checking all the numbers for anyone planning to buy one. There are a lot of clones that look really close. The real ones are worth an enormous amount of money.
That is a correct color for a 71 X, it looks like the hood tach has been taken off, no emblem on the Grill Hmmm? Could be it looks like it's worth checking out!
:jd: Wow............ what a website. I am quite the Olds man and now I know why they are so hard to find. This guy has pictures of them all rotting around the country. If you get a few minutes tour the picture pages. Some of the rarest Oldsmobiles there is. Happy New Year JA
You are right; in '70, the only colors were yellow and white, but in '71, many colors weere available. The GSX emblem comes right off, perhaps it is broken and the owner failed to replace it. The grille is the same as for a GS, there's a couple of holes in the grille, molded in, for an emblem. This is an old car, after all, and not a show piece, you should expect a car like this to be missing bits- the fact that the GSX emblem is missing does not prove or disprove the car's identity. The scoop grilles for a '71 look like that, they appear to be correct '71 scoops to me. I beleive that in '72, they went back to the 1970 style scoop grilles. I'm not certain, and someone will be able to verify this, but I also beleive that the hood tach was not a standard item on all GSXs. I want to say that a non-Stage 1 455 or a 350 powered GSX may well have the hood tach omitted by the original owner's choice, at time of purchase. I do seem to remember that by 1971, you could get a hood tach on a regular GS from the factory.
