    short.

it sounds like you have a short on the output leads (speaker wires) of the amplifer in your radio. maybe open it up and take a look for corosion near the location where the wires are soldered to the board and folow a couple of the traces. Another thing to check is if there is a short to ground at the ends of the speaker leads. (there should be some conductivity between ground and each lead but not much)

we had an old Crown 600watt pa amp that would do the same thing if we turned it up to loud. it also could be your impedance is wrong but you'd atleast hear something at the speaker.

although I'm curious to know how you have a buick radio (whatever this is guessing factory) an AM/FM (guessing aftermarket) and 8track (guessin connected to buick radio)
    all connected to eachother.

DOH!!! re read what you said. is the amplifier the only thing with speakers connected to it? if so check the leads on it and also check to see if there is a switch to bridge the amp and make sure it is in the correct position.
