I am thinking about buying an 86 Buick T Type WH1 from out of state. The car has the original R12 A/C and the owner says it may have leaked and needs a recharge. When the car was inspected it was stated that the A/C worked but did not get very cold. I was thinking that there probably is no R12 around here in Central FL so I might have to convert to 134. That said, I was wondering what the cost of a conversion would be. Any opinions or ideas would be appreciated.

There are products on the market that replace R12. If you change to 134, you will have to change all the o-rings, flush out the system and put 134 compatible oil in the compressor. I believe that you have a CCOT system. Not having done the conversion, I would expect that the orifice tube would be different. Also, 134 has less specific heat capacity, so will not give you the colder temps that R12 does.
