R/c car racing

After hitting the fullsize car hobby hard for about 5 or six years and having issues with my last 455 build I got back into another old hobby of mine, Competetively racing r/c cars. I don't mean the retail store type either. Full blown racing with actual small scale big speed racing cars.

I had been active in that from about 1979 and only stopped when in the early 90's it got too expensive after getting married and having a couple boys that also wanted to race. Quit in about 95 and got back into my other love which was Buicks of course.

Did the Buick stuff including shows, Club activities and weekly cruise ins till about 2004 when my own motor issues really bummed me out and I just parked the car and quit it all. Did'nt do any shows, Cruise ins or club activities. Basically disappeared from it and my full size car buddies. Kept in touch with a few of them but for the most part I just went liitle car racing again and was gone.

Now if I had spent all the money on my 72 as I had spent racing the little ones since then I could have a real nice ride right now. Rc racing is an addiction and if you've ever known anyone with it, Get them help:eek2:

Lifes little decisions make you go hmmm sometimes.

Now I'm back with interest in finishing my car. Never did plan on getting rid of it so it's always been right there in the garage(moved twice with it).

Now my predicament is how to continue with both and still afford to eat. I can cut back on the rc racing and taking the little Mrs. out to dinner every once in a while until she catches on. She's bound to notice the late nights in the garage and the burnt hydrocarbons smell eventually but until she does.

It's covert Buick operations full steam ahead.

as far as the rc racing, I mostly did asphalt oval with a little dirt oval thrown in for a change of pace. These suckers are complex and fast if you've never seen one. And the racers take them and the racing just as seriously as the fullsize racers do.

After the races it's just good old fashioned fun :beers2: and that's where the similarities begin. Good people, Good times and good fun. Just like the fullsize car people. :TU:

I got into RC racing when they came out with the RC10. 1986 I believe? Up until that time i've been racing slot cars my whole life. And still do. I have probably 10 to 20 K worth of RC stuff over the years, sitting on shelves.

I was big into the X-ray M18 on a carpet road coarse. These suckers get up to 38 or 40 mph on a 60 or so foot straight.

Got my feet wet on the RC 10 dirt and stayed in the dirt for many years. My true love is 18th scale 4 wheel carpet racing.

Oh and all along I always had some kind of BBB.:TU:

Slot cars? My dad and older brother raced those and naturally when I was old enough I did too, I was entered in my first race in 1964. Still have the ribbon somewhere. Still have an old box with three or four cars in it in the garage.

I think there is truly a carguy gene. Some have it all their lives and some try to get it. I've had it since birth.

I was soldering up my own brass and piano wire chassis while most other kids my age were coloring with crayons.

At one time here in the Jax area there were 17 commercial tracks(slot cars) and now there are none.

As far as the RC10 goes? I worked in the hobby at the time they came out and I've probably assembled a hundred or so. I could get those old 6 gear trannys to spin and spin and spin. :idea2:

Here's where I race rc locally. I maintained this track from late 1986 to 1991 and at that time it was a fast dirt(clay)oval. These puppies are scootin! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbXr1YEfrD0

    I race competitivly - F1 class

I have a Tamiya F102 Chassis that I have had for about 10 years or so. Don't think there is an original part left on it. I made a custom aluminun chassis for it years back...

A lot of fun when the snow sets in, our local club rents an old hall. We set it up with a huge carpet tract, electronic lap times/counting etc..

Won the championship about 6 years ago...finished second 3 or 4 times....The guy that kept beating me finsihed 2nd in Canada, and qualified for the north american championships in Calf. he finished 7th there and failed to get a trip to Japan for the worlds!!!

Taught my son to drive it a few weeks ago - of course with the power tuned way down and the rear gears loosened off. He'll be ready for next winters circiut!

Oh yea, i've had it forever myself. Once we had a neighborhood build your own push type go-kart contest. In front of my house on Ave K ,brooklyn ny. I was 9 or 10 and young in the running. I was up against every other age group and wooped all their asses and took home first place. My machine was called "The Red Barron" it had a milk crate with a toilet bowl lid for a seat, had big fat 5 spoked "bid wheels" real axle and skinny wire front wheels. With 4 big chrome tail pipes. And of coarse it had a snazzy red paint scheme.

Jason those are too nice to race! Thats the problem with the cars that have been coming out in the last 10 to 15 years. Have you been to Buzzerama in brooklyn? Church ave? I grew up in that place.

And there's still a few slot car places around me but the place I was running carpet road closed 3 years ago. And I had to travel about an hour and 45 minutes each way! Didn't get home on sat nights until 3 am.

I like kicking it old school! :pp

I made them. Its not hard nor expensive. It averages about $65 to make one. Uses all modern readily available parts and some scrap brass. They look like they were made 40 years ago though! Keeps me busy during the winter

Port Jeff Raceway is the nearest track. I havent raced them in a few years though. Just like the real car! :Dou: :spank:
