I guess this is more for fun than anything. My buddy asked me tonight on our way to Pittsburgh Raceway Park (a.k.a. Keystone) if I knew of any 430's that were quicker than his. His motor is a standard bore and stroke, non-decked 430 that he bought for $50. He reringed it and put new bearings in it. He home ported the hell out of the heads and stuck a "Hemi Killer" cam in that was either reground or custom ground for his Stage 2 motor from the club. Intake is an SP1 with a Quadrajet. Headers are TA's shorties with 3" exhaust and 1 chamber flowmasters that dump at the rear axles. The car is an 83 T-Type with a TH-350, rear is a 9" with 3.89 and a locker. Car weighs 2995. His best time is 11.53 @ 116. Does anyone run a 430 quicker than this?? BTW... best time tonight was a 11.72 @ 116. He only got two runs in then a 50 cent plug he had on his timing cover split in half and sprayed the world with water. He didn't have another plug so we went home.
Our 3150 lbs backhalfed Regal ran 10.90's with a 430 with ported iron heads, 308 cam SP-1 ect.. long ago retired, but it was a great bracket motor. The quickest 430 I have ever known belonged to a local Buick racer named Steve Dooley, in a bantam roadster. Ran 9.60's Steve is not with us anymore, and the car is long gone. JW
Fred Catlin had his 67 Riviera (4500lbs) running in the 11's 20 yeras ago and his 69 GS Stage 2 iron head running low 10's. This guy built Buick engines when many of the board members were in grade school. He is still around. Bill
The 67 GS 4spd I had from 90-95 had a 68 430 in it. I ran a best 12.86 with home ported intake, heads, exhaust manifolds on slicks. I would guess a Regal would be faster.
10's with a 430 is certainly an awesome feat, and 9's is that much better. My buddy put this motor together to just get a feel for the car before he puts his Stage 2 motor in it. At first he thought it felt like a mid 12 second car. The same way his 69 Sportwagon felt with the Stage 2 motor. His first pass was an 11.8 back in April. You should have seen his face.
I had good luck running a 430 in a 73 Regal. consistent 11.75 and I think I can get an 11.6 or 11.5 out of it yet. The car with me in it is 3640 Lbs. Motor is not that radical. Ta 113 cam, headers, TA SP1 intake, and mild porting on the 69 iron heads and 9.75 compression.
I wish I could have a ride in that car now Joe. It really scared the piss out of me when he first slammed that motor together and we shot up Primrose Drive on its virgin trip in one hell of a hurry!! The timing was way off and it was popping. He's worked out the bugs and it is a real shocker.
He spun me around the pits one evening about a month ago. She gets! Boy, does she get! If he would've spent some money on the motor who knows how fast it could go.
I told him about the responses this thread has been getting (he is computer illiterate). He asked me "what's the quickest 430 that is running now?". This thread has really gotton him interested in maybe keeping this 430 in the car, and seeing how far he can push it. I think he's asking the question this way to see how he stacks up against those currently running 430's.
No chance of Eggs keeping that 430 in the car. He ran 11.60's at Quaker for Nats. Now its only a matter of time before he bumps up 25 cubes to the big stuff!!
Well never had a 430 but with the original 400 at 3860lbs street tires driven to the track I went 12.72 104mph with just holley 800 a performer intake no idea what cam 2500 stall cov. no head work
