I went to a Junk Yard and got a power steering box out of an 87 GN. Hooked right up to my 65 Skylark, $35.00. I had to get the pressure side hose modified to a Metric fitting, $10.00. Got the BRF Trans too. $200.00. Any box will fit from a late model car. Camaro, Fireburd, Etc. It will save you a bunch of money.

Get the box out of a 90's Jeep Grand Cherekee. F-car stuff will have too little steering angle. Do a search here on this, bunches on how to do it.

I did the same on my 67 but I lost turning radius. That's why I had mine rebuilt with a quick ratio this time. Yes it's a bit more $$ but worth it to me because there are less complications.

Since i live in Germany i cant go to the junkyard to get some parts from american cars and sending something to the US to have it rebuilt would be very expensive because of the shipping costs. I need a replacement unit that i can swap here.

I think you might be surprised at where you can find the quick ratio boxes. Here is a link to what vehicles have these boxes http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref29.html

    Also see http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=55808

The saginaw 700 steering gear box has to be the most common steering gear box ever made. I know that you will not have the number that we see here in the USA but do you have salvage yards at all? (hope this is not a dumb question) Jeeps are sold world wide and they must crash a few.

If you have some type of salvage yard that has US stuff look in any GM rear drive car or truck. Look for a box that has a Z cast into it. You guys in Europe have to be really dedicated to try and make these old cars work. We complain all the time about the cost of Buick parts vs Chevy and it has to be far worse for you. Good luck on finding the parts.

I took the pitman arm off the "Z" box and re-used my old one. I haven't noticed any loss in turning radius.

    Ponch,
That's because you used a g body box. The f bodies steering box will make a difference. Not everyone gets lucky like you and finds a GN box. You should have ripped off the belt system from the motor too!

Have to get the X out storage and go terrorize the North side of town! :3gears:

@sailbrd: It is not that bad because you can order almost any part online so new parts are not a problem. But of course it is impossible to find junk parts. Yes, we have Jeeps over here but i guess it will be hard to find a wrecked one... so the best thing would be a complete unit that i can swap in.

Hi Doug; When I went to Cut Rate Auto Part's (CRAP), I told them what I wanted. They told me to come back in 2 Hours and they would have Everything off the front of the engine for me. I gave them 2 1/2, but when I got there, the car was still on the storage rack. I wasn't too pissed! They said they were real busy. So they started right then. I got the Trans and the Box, but he was having a hard time with the rest of the stuff. I wasn't waiting around, so I took what I had and left. Patience isn't my strong suit, but right then it should have been. I should have taken the whole Engine and Trans when I think about it. The Turbocharger and intercooler were gone, but most of the other stuff was there. But my charge card took a $235 hit as it was, so I just called it good.
I went to my Son's place yesterday and got the Skylark out. Took it out for an Hour or so. I saw a few other guy's out too. There was a Hurst Olds following me down Dort Hwy. from Grand Blanc. I slowed up but he stayed behind. The lights wouldn't co-operate, I wanted to run him so bad!! Not much other traffic either. I finally spoke to him in traffic. Said he had a 307. Too bad. The Skylark would have had a great lunch!! I didn't have my under bumper cold air scoop on either. I could tell the difference. I haven't heard from the guy that is making my new one. I probably should just sneak in to the Tin Shop and make it myself, it wouldn't take long. My coverall's seemed to have shrunk tho! I wish I would have been into all this before I retired! Also I put my Cragars back on my Van. There was a Cop at the corner taking pictures, so I had him pull in my driveway and park in back of it so I could get a picture. Turned out pretty good. Also, come and terrorize the North End anytime!!:beer

You can say that again. :) Rollerball is right though - we can get most of our stuff from the States as long as shipping isn't too expensive. And at least in Sweden there are at least 10 shops that specialize in parts for american cars which helps a lot as well.
