I removed my 80 Buick 350 motor from my 76 Century to replace the rear main seal. When I put it back and conected the wires I put the 12v power wire to the dist into the spot for the tach to conect to. I didn't realize what I'd done, and the car ran really bad. I found the problen and conected it right, but it still runs really bad. What is this small round canister in the dist?

that's your coil for your HEI, I'm sorry to say. You've run power through the negative side, it seems to me

If the car still runs, I doubt whether you damaged anything. If you fried the coil or module, it wouldn't run at all. Are you sure you put the plug wires back on right? Double check the firing order. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. You wouldn't be the first guy to reverse two plug wires, usually 5 & 7. Small round cannister??, are you talking about the vacuum advance cannister?

No I was thinking about the small metal cylinder, I guess it's the module. I'll check the firing order again. Thanks for the input.

    You do have HEI, right?

Is this small canister underneath the distributor cap?

Your module is a small, flat bar with an angled portion off of each end. Usually black but I have seen yellow. Wires plug into the ends at the angled parts. Your module shouldn't be round

You're looking at the condensor (capacitor) It is there to stop current spikes from the module.

12 volts will not hurt it. Why do you ask, is something wrong with it?
