Hi everyone, I am now in the process of getting my bucket seats ready to be recovered (I am going to *try* and do this myself as I have the work space and time - otherwise I'm bringing the seats to my local interior guy). I removed part of the old saddle seat cover to inspect the foam underneath and it is certainly worn and will need to be replaced (it even looks like newer foam was added on top of the old foam at one time?). I was going to order a new foam set from Original Parts Group but my question is how to remove the foam? It seems like the original foam was glued to a almost mesh like white material. I have inclosed two pics of the foam and what it is attached to. Also, how do I install the new foam? Is there any threads on a step by step look at how to take apart and then recover bucket seats? Or am I over my head and should I have a professional do it? o No:
>>Hi Nicholas. Thanks for your link. I'm going to look into getting that latch hook rug backing material that you used. I have extra carpet saved but I think it would be too thick to use and the material you used looks like it would be easier to use for a base for the foam. My seats covers and headrest covers should be arriving in a few weeks and today I ordered the new seat foam, all chrome pieces, and the bucket seat mounting brackets from OPG.
Ames performance Pontiac sells the correct style bucket mounting brackets not the bogus straight ones that most suppliers sells. They also include the single outboard front bracket the the other suppliers are oblivious about. If you do not have these outboard brackets as well the seats will not fit right. Finished seat should be attached with two washer type nuts on the inboard bracket, one washer nut on the front outboard bracket and one bolt that should fit in the original outboard rear threaded hole. I have installed several sets of buckets in GM A bodies starting with the wrong way when I was a kid to finally the right way.
>>Hi Dave. Thanks for this info! I had no idea about this. I kept seeing the same two brackets that OPG, YO, and others were selling. Do you have a number for Ames? I'll try looking them up on the internet.
You can get the correct 4 piece bucket seat brackets from NPD for $50 Part #C-11564-103A in their Chevelle catalog. www.nationalpartsdepot.com
also, the seat bottom foam may have channels/v cuts in the face of the foam. u may have to fill those channels. the channels/grooves are cust for seat covers that have straps so that the cover can be pulled down properly. that is how the 67,68,69 camaros seat covers are.
>>Hi George. Thanks for the info. I cancelled the bucket seat brackets from OPG and ordered them from NPD. They had them in stock and I should get them in a week.
>>Hi Gerry. Thanks for this info as well. I don't know what the foam seats will look like but if they have channels I will be sure to fill them in with extra foam.
I ordered Legendary seat covers and had them installed locally but had to send them to Legendary to correct problems. I would just send my seats to them next time first and you will be sure to get them installed correctly. I will be doing that on my 67 GS convertible.
>>Hi Ed. What problems did you have with the Legendary seat covers? I'm on a budget which is why I am doing the seats myself. I think that Legendary charged something like $200 plus materials to do each seat which would mean I wouldn't get bucket seats in my car for at least another year.
First the foam from OPG was to big. I would get the foam from Legendary and I think they covers were cut wrong but they took care of it under warrenty. They came back and looked great.
My foams were from Y1 and fit fine. (I only used the bottoms, re-used my original back foam.) I had to cut open, not fill, the channels. Don't know if 71 has the separate side bolsters that require the channel or not. On the Y1 foams there is just an indentation where you cut the channel if you need it. Nothing to fill if you don't.
>>Thanks Nicholas and Ed for the info in your posts. I had already ordered the OPG seat foams so I'll have to custom cut them if they are too large (they didn't arrive yet). From the pic in OPG catalogue it looked like the seat foams had an indentation to cut the channel but Iwon't know for sure until I get them.
>>Just got in the foam from OPG today and they do have the channels. I'll be buying an extra sheet of foam to fill them in when my seat covers arrive from Legendary.
Seat covers arrived!!! Hi everyone, My custom order sandalwood bucket seat and head rest covers arrived today from Legendary. It only took a total of a month for the covers to arrive and shipping was only $12 (I kid you not, I have the invoice in my hands). I'm still waiting for some extra foam to arrive from OPG but in the meantime I had a question for anyone who bought Legendary's headrest covers. After fitting the covers over your headrest, do you staple them underneath into the headrest to keep them in place?
Chris, I made a mistake & bought headrest covers for my '71. I " THINK" they are meant for bench seat headrests only. Hence, I have a new pair without a use.
>>Hi Steve. Legendary actually sells two types of headrest covers - bucket and bench. I fit my new covers over the bucket headrests this morning and they fit perfect (nice and tight with no sagging). I'm going to use a staple gun to secure the underside material of the cover to the headrest. By the way Steve, is that a new Buick you are working on seen in your avatar?
