Hi, I was wondering if a 8.5 axle out of a G Body Grand National will bolt into a 64 Skylark? Are there any modifications that need to be made? Thanks!
No, it will not bolt in. i believe the lower and possible upper control arm angle/lengths are different. Monzaz is our resident rear axle expert. I'm sure he will be along to give you a definitive answer. What is wrong with your 64 8.2? Its got bolt in axles and parts are easily available.
Too much work and too narrow for the car. Plus the axle tubes are only 2.5" your stock rear rebuilt will do the job. Spend the mony and build it correct. Jim J D
Ok thanks for your knowledge! The reason I ask is I want to transplant a complete Grand National drivetrain. I have read many different things on what axles will work. Some say it bolts in with minor modifications. The 64's require more then the later 65+. I know the stock axle 8:2 is very good but the 8.5 3:42 posi works well with the LC2 engine and transmission.
Just contact Monzaz. You can get a posi, 3.42 gears, even upgraded axles. The GN rear is a C clip rear. Your rear is bolt in axle.
Didn't some of the 64 Skylarks come with a 7.?" rear end? If so,and he has one of those,he'll definitely want to change to something better. I think mine(my car originally came with a sbb 300 2bbl,with a ST300) had one of those that I scrapped about 10 years ago(was a long time ago,so I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly what rear it had),and went with a Chevelle 12 bolt.
Did they even have a smaller rear back in 64? I believe everything is 8.2 10 bolt bolt in axle. Unless Monzaz left it out, it looks like 8.2 is it. The 7.5 and 7.6 didn't start until the mid 70's and later. http://www.jdrace.com/default.htm
Yes the 71-72 Skylark/GS has the 8.5 with bolt in axles, even better than the GN rear. I have one in my 70.
