    436'd Skylark Sweet Fancy Moses!!!!!

I have a set of tal spindles from a 71 Z28. I am well aware of teh control aarm issue, as well as the balljloint thing. my question is the bumpsteer issue. What is exactly bump steer? I have a very basic understanding of it. All I know it has something to do with the suspension compressing, and that pulls on the tie-rods or something?? I'm not sure..

Is it really as bad as it sounds? can it be fixed, or some how reduced?
or should i just live with it? It sounds unsafe... any input would be appreciated...

My spring project is working on bump steer. Basically it involves the toe setting changing as the front suspension goes through compression. This will cause a darting behavior when you hit a bump or load and unload the suspension in a curve. The effect gets worse as you put on better tires. The old narrow bias plies and stock suspensions did not create the problems we now have if you upgraded.

There is a company that sells a kit that I am trying to find now. If anyone knows who it is let me know.

Here is a good link even if it is for Mustangs. http://www.modularpower.com/bumpsteer.html

    Bumpsteer, bad news.

Basically as the suspension travels it changes the alignment of the suspension effectively alterning the steering input angle.

I understand [although I've yet to look into it in detail] that putting the B-body spindles on our cars moves the steering knuckle pick up point about 2 inches forward becuase the steering shaft on the B-body spindle is longer [compare teh two off the car - huge difference!] Hence the angles between the steering box and centre link change from straight across to meeting the knuckle to tie rods pointing forwards.

This I understand is the route of the problem. They exact problem on the road it causes I don't know [yet] and the fix I don't know [yet]. However the tall B-bdy spindles give a dramatic improvement in handling due to changing the roll centre of the wheel in a corner [tucking the top in and not actively pushing it out! - v bad news!] so there must be a fix people have.

    Anybody????? Let's share!

    best regards

"how bad the B body spindle mod really is." Sorry not bying it. My b-spindle setup works better than any stock A, G, or 1st and 2nd generation F body suspension.

There is a minor bump steer issue that most people would not even notice. For me it is a matter of making the mods as close to perfect as I can get, therefore I am interested in reducing this tendency. But a properly setup GW, Hotchkiss, or other tall spindle setup flatout drives better.
