this question is for some one that has done disk brake conversion, prefably did the work them sleves, but specifically, george from NY with the 67 skylark. i also have a 67, and i am looking to go disk. i am re running all new lines with stainless steel swagelock tubing, and swagelock fittings. my question is the proportioning valve! how did you instal that to work out so that more goes to your fronts than your backs?and im also wondering if you have to get a bigger master cylinder, i have a two chamber as it is. also looking for some nice custom shops in maryland, ciecil county area, to do the job. thanks, sinclair
I have a 70, so I don't know if this will answer your question, but I basically got my parts from the junkyard. They provided parts that interchanged with my car. I used the junkyard booster and proportioning valve; theory being it was correct for power, front discs. I bought a new master cylinder for a 70, one for power brakes.
I'm with Truzi, head for the boneyard. Look for any GM A-body from 68-72 and check for discs on the front, and ALWAYS look under chevies for a 12-bolt rearend. If you're like me (POOR) then the junkyard is your best bet.
Adjustible willwood proportioning valve was installed only for the rear brakes and the fronts have nothing, they are direct,i didnt install that particular part of my brake system, Stage 1 Auto did in N.J.,and i also have a disc/disc master cylinder i had bought from Master Power Brakes about a year or so before i did the disc/disc set up. Thanks
Many aftermarket kits use a proportioning valve with a screw to adjust the bias between the front and back brakes.
George, I just bought a set of 12" Wilwood's for my car. What size do you have? I am wondering if you ever tried a 15" wheel on them? I have the factory disc-brake rally, and the salesman said they may/may not clear.
Adam, mine are either 12 1/4 or 12 1/2 discs,i never tried 15" but i`ve tried 16",i dont know if the 15" may fit or not? Thanks
12.2" to be exact on the spec's for mine. I'll pass the word when I find out if they fit. Do you have power or manual brakes, and how does it stop w/them? I'm thinking of taking off my brake booster as my cam is borderline too big to make vacuum for it. Oh yeah, did you put Camaro spindles on with the custom control arms, or stay with the stock spindles? Did it make a noticeable handling difference if you did? Thanks,
Adam,i have power brakes and its borderline with the cam i have, the car stops on the dime, day and night difference from before when i had stock discs in the front and drums in the rear,i am using stock style disc spindles that i had taken off a `72 chevelle, and the handling if definately on the money with the sway bars and all. Thanks
then I ought to be drop-dead impressed. I have aluminum drums and panic stops mean, "I'm in a panic, 'cuz I doubt like Hell its gonna stop"
Whoa there!!! As much as I love Swagelok fittings, I don't believe their ferrule/ nut system is rated at the line pressures your brake system will be seeing.....You better check the specs....they're on their site somewhere at www.swagelok.com You should use the proper double-flared connections.... If you want stainless steel lines, just buy a set pre made. They're avail from several venders. There's a writeup on the buickperformance.com site about installing a 4 wheel disk setup....check there for the details. Are there armadillos in Boston??? :eek2:
