    Finally replaced my edelbrock 750 with a q-jet. A buddy of mine had it from a buildup he did a couple yrs. ago. Came off a 79 Camaro 350. Runs like a dream. No bog or hesitation. responce is great. Best thing about it is he gave me the carb. Serial#17059216. I am a happy man.:laugh: :laugh:

    What car did you put it on?

    Did you plug the EGR crap on that carb? It's a chebbie carb for a 79 model car. Just though you would like to know:TU:

    It's nice to see others are having good luck with the QJets...from working on mine recently, I've been able to get it to run considerably better than the edelbrock.

    what is this EGR crap you are refering too??? I've had a 75 and later style q-jet on my buick for a while, but it runs way better with the holley 600cfm...
    What EGR stuff has to be plugged?

    Well, I'm not sure how all of them are set up, but there are more vacuum hose fittings littering the carb than say, a 71 qjet.

    I've got a qjet from 76 Buick...and it seems ok to me...the only difference visually is the hot air choke...as opposed to the divorced choke most of the Buick guys are used to seeing.

    I'll try to find a couple pictures of carbs with and without the extra vacuum fittings.

    Ok...found a couple on ebay to compare.

    This is a carb off a 1979 Buick. Notice the large vacuum fitting that looks to be about 3/8" coming off the top center of the carb. This should go to the air pump or something related to the EGR or smog junk. This is only one of the extra fittings the carb has...I believe that there is one more small fitting on the front that hooks up to the EGR.

    Ahh...one more thing. There might be an altitude adjustment "thingy" that takes the place of the spacer in the Buick carbs. This can hinder performance.

    This one is just tlike the one I have on my car...76 model qjet.

    This still has smogging stuff in it, but I can't tell. The only real differenced I see between this and the 71's are the way the jet them...and use different metering rods. You can change this quite easily.

    Notice there is no big knobby thing sticking out of the top center of this carb. THe 3/8" fitting is gone. There is no altitude adjustment on this...which you can't see w/o pulling it apart.

    There's just more junk than what has to be there on the newer carbs. Not to say you can't performance build one of them. It's just harder to get peak performance with a honkin' smog carb.

    Plugged 4 or 5 vacuum fitting. Using 1 for vac advance and 1 goes to the intake. Hooked the brake booster to back of carb. Everything else is plugged. Runs great. Searched google for the ser.# on the carb. Brought up a 79 Corvette website. I don't care what it came off of as long as it ddoes the job.

    Integral choke

    Hey Adam,

    You seem to know a lot about Q jets, certainly more than I do. Do you know what year Buick went to the integral choke VS the choke stat being seperate (divorced) and sitting alone on the intake?

    Thanks!

    73 I believe...although that could've changed from Make to make. (chevy vs buick)

    Qjets are the best unless you have money too burn.
    Adam ID a Q for me today.
    I thought I would through it into the mix as it looks different.

    Q-Jet ID 7029232

    70 = Rochester ID Pre-1976
    29 = 1969 (Year of model vehicle installed on)
    2 = 49 State Carb (if this was a 5, then it would be a CA carb)
    3 = Cadillac Model
    2 = even number(automatic application) If odd, then it's a manual

    P.S.

    Q: What kind of a man takes pics of a carb on the bed?
    A: A single one.

    Like the other many benefits of being single - you do this Because You Can!

    Man, that is one rough looking Q Jet! You know that you're missing linkage for the secondaries, right?

    Is that thing worth saving? I'd buy one of the carbs on ebay right now before I tackled that one.

    They run about 30-40 bucks for a good core.

    Or you can search the yards and pay 10-15 bucks.

    Yep it is rough. It has been sitting in my shed too long. I got it on a 350 Chevy intake a long time ago. It use too move and work but ended up on the side of the shed that leaked. Soon as I noticed it I moved it too the dry side but it kinda grew some stuff.

    [The linkage is there on the right side. It has manual secondaries.]

    I just came across it cleaning and wondered on it specs. Might throw it in a tub of old oil for another year or so then see how it looks.
