i just put my recently rebuilt(bout 2 mo ago but never really ran it) q-jet on my 78 estate wagon(403 olds v8). and it started leakin fuel out the carb..... i thought maybe the air horn gasket was leakin so i bought a kit and put a new gasket on(maybe wasnt the best idea..ou: ), but when i put it back on, it ran fine for a few minutes.. then today when iget back from work.... i started it back up again and same thing.... fuel is leakin out the top of the carb... any idea to what the problem might be? thanks.. ive been tryin 2 get this car on the road for a WHILE now... gettin a lil frustrated with the lack of time. thanks
alright.,... but on the curious side... why would it run ok one day and not right another? im tryin 2 learn a bit more bout my rochester..... obviously i havnt learned enough.. thanks
Well, it could be a couple problems, but this is the most common one. It could also be that the needle is stuck open, allowing fuel to enter regardless of float position. OR you could have too much fuel pressure, but you're not running an electric pump are you?
nope... i replaced the mechanical one a few months ago... should be ok... i ran this carb a bit on it before i had to replace the choke housing with the old one and i never had this problem... it was setting for a while though....
Could also be a warped air horn. If you tighten the front bolts too much, you can warp it. Try 2 gaskets. If the carb is flooding out, either the float is set wrong, or the needle/seat is sticking. It can run OK at times, then it sticks and floods out. Replace the needle/seat, and set the float level.
ight... thanks guys... ima go ahead n replace the needle/seat... ill get back to you on the results.....
alright... so i took the carb off and lowered the float level... replaced the needle n seat... problem solved.... thanks for all the help guys... im still tryin 2 learn so im juss hopin im not wasting your time with stupid questions... thanks again
