my 455 came from a 74 riv, but it had a rebuilt carb probably from autozone or something on it.
It has been none running for quite a while and will continue to not run for another year or two until the motor is built.
The carburetor on it is # 17056212 which from what I can figure was for a Chevy, auto trans and 49 state emisions.

What size is this thing tho? I can't find a listing of numbers with their size anywhere.

My 455 will be bored +40 running 9.3:1 compression approx and a cam with .500/.512 lift and 284/290 duration. Pushing a th400 and 2:74 posi rear in a 67 skylark.

Will this be an appropriate carb to be rebuilt, or should I just start looking for a complete new carb to start with?

Since I have the time to look, I might as well know what I want and then I maybe I can snag one if it comes up for sale on the board.

I would sure appreciate some knowledge as to what I have and what I may need for this car.
    Thanks
    Jon

I would recommend a Buick 800 cfm carb modified for your engine. Do you need a choke? 71 to 74 have divorced choke like your current, or you could go with 75/76 and convert to electric choke. I don't run chokes on mine and remove the components to open a little more air flow.

    IMHO

I will be using a Performer intake which I believe has provisions for the divorced choke. The original 74 cast iron intake had a big pan thing that fit into the manifold and the choke spring went in there. I probably will need a choke on this since even in the summer in Oregon, the mornings can be in low 60's for a 85 degree afternoon and those are the type days I will drive it. Plus I will take it down to the beach sometimes and will want it to start and run well in mornings.

So if I want a 800cfm buick unit, what number setup would I look for? Like I said, I have a year or two to find one but need to know what to look for.

They have early 70's 455 Carb's in the Parts for Sale section here all the time at really good prices. You can look here http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Kbuick3.htm and find what carb you want, it will turn up for sale here. If you can work out the choke situation there is really nothing wrong with the carb you have now.

I sell built carbs and several others on this board.

You need a carb like 7043240, the 4th digit (3) is the year. A 71 to 74 year carb with this number sequence is 800 cfm. Be extremely careful if you buy one to rebuild yourself or to have someone else rebuild. If they have been through a reman shop, there is no telling what parts have been put on the there. Most have wrong baseplates and throttle shafts. There are many threads on this board with quadrajet purchase warnings from generic reman shops.

    Great carbs when built correctly.
