I currently have the engine out of the vehicle being rebuilt (the results of the pistons hitting the spark plugs from an earlier post) and I am taking most of the under hood parts off and cleaning everything with the eventual goal of painting the engine bay and areas of the frame. I am disassembling the factory A/C hoses and fittings and have reached the A/C housing mounted to the passenger side fire wall. On the front of the housing is a putty-like substance that seems like it is some kind of sealer. Does anyone know what that substance is and if I remove it what do I replace it with. Also any recommendations on the best paint for the engine bay and frame areas. I saw some you tube video on Eastwood paints. They seem pretty good but a little expensive.
Are you talking about the stuff all around the housing . I have a non AC car when I did mine I just used rubber undercoating and changed the tip to make sure it doesn't shoot out like a rocket
If you go to an old school parts store, ask for ‘dum dum’. They’ll know what you want. (At the chains they’ll get the guy they call ‘Dum Dum’.) Patrick
What you need for the firewall AC box is 3M brand Strip Chaulk - PN 08578. One box will be A LOT more than you'll ever need. It also gets used between the two halves of the box if you end up taking the box apart and want a new seal there.
I use the same as Patton. https://www.amazon.com/Black-Strip-...eywords=3m+strip+caulk&qid=1574918599&sr=8-17
duct seal at menards for 1.99 for a 50 foot roll. let it warm up just a little, install it, squeeze some out and trim to fit.
Doing the same here. Picked up some 3M strip caulk #08578 from NPD National Parts Depot their #903-1.
I am about at this point too , what about where the tubes come out of the box ,strip caulk , or is there something else out there ? any suggestions on a good replacement evaporator ? thanks
I got an AC heater box gasket set thru @ToddsGS from diecastmusclecars.com it has foam pieces for the tubes coming out and various pieces that fit elsewhere. It also has a foam rope seal, but I was going to use the strip caulk instead. Hope to install it soon. Just got heater core pressure tested as a precaution.
Paints.......we use ( and sell) most of the products that we purchase thru Inline Tube. We've used Eastwood products in the past and still use some but the Inline tube paint dries faster. I carry there Bare Steel, Cast Iron, Aluminum and Buick Red for the engines. You can see all of these on my engine or engine bay pages. https://www.diecastmusclecars.com/buick_engine_parts.htm Here's the Buick Red...... .
If you're talking about the seal around the outside edge of the heater box, (inside the engine bay) I used that As Seen On TV stuff called Flex Seal. Bought it in black and it worked great. Flex Seal Spray Rubber Sealant Coating, 10-oz, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CQ4HWHT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sqg4DbA5J14JJ
Sounds like butyl tape, you can get it lots of places, including ebay. in all sorts of widths and thicknesses. Folks use it for sealing all sorts of stuff. When it gets hot, it gets really sticky, but gasoline dissolves it.
There is a different material that gets wrapped around the upper tube coming out of the front of the evaporator case....I believe it's called Evaporator Bulb Wrap or Insulation. You should be able to find it at a local auto parts store or online. DON'T use butyl tape on anything in the engine compartment.....it can create a big mess and is a nightmare if you ever have to try and remove it. Here's an example of the correct Evap Bulb Wrap material....you may be able to find locally: https://www.macsautoparts.com/early...VEPDACh0kHw-IEAQYASABEgIbV_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
