About the take the rotor out to install my crane recurv kit.

Is there I way I can **** thing up when I put it back in or is it pretty much dummy proof ?

If I pull the entire distributor out (need to do this at some point since its 180 off). How can I make sure I put it back in the right spot ?

DEADMANSCURVE my first word : truck

    timing/restart

if memory serves me correctly , and it better because i've got the same job to do soon , as follows : with the engine in decent tune and basic timing set where you want it mark the #1 plug position on the cap ( later on that ) pop the dist. cap off and line the rotor contact up with a spot on the engine that won't move , mark it , clean off a spot (if needed) on the base of the dist. where it meets the timing cover and mark a spot on the base and a corresponding spot on the cover . yank the dist. out and DO NOT turn the engine over . remember those dist. gears are not cut straight so when you put the dist. back in and align your marks back up you have to allow for twist . in the event that something ( beer!! )happens ( friendly help ) and you don't trust your marks , try this : pull driver side valve cover off , as the #1 piston is coming up to top dead center ( take spark plug out and use something long and harmless to feel the piston movement )and the #1 INTAKE valve is closing , the timing mark on balancer should be close to zero , now line your rotor contact up with your #1 position on the dist. cap , you did remember to mark that right ? , pop the cap back on and that should allow you to fire up and reset your basic timing and then go from there . to just install your recurve kit , cap off , rotor off , follow kit directions , rotor on , cap on , take to a GOOD shop that knows what to do with a dist. machine and have them fine tune it for ya' . have fun . The rotor is keyed. read: goes on one way only unless you brute force it.

Your dist is 180 off? So the plug wires are 180 off also, right....

Installing a curve kit is more work then just installing it and letting it run.

If your not up to all the work yourself, save some time and pull the dist out and bring it to a dist shop and have them install the kit for you with the specs of 20-24 deg starting 1200rpm, in by 2400-2600rpm.

When reinstalling, have a buddy stick his finger in the #1 plug hole as mentioned above and bump the starter until his finger is blown out, you can also use a compression gauge for this, just make sure to tape the relief valve open, Bump it over until you see the timing mark between 0 and 12 (the markers full range). Drop the dist in with the rotor pointing at the vac advance or slightly below it. Make sure the advance itself is pointing towards the front bumper. Plug everything up and light it up. Reset the timing to 10-12* and go test.

No pinging? Excellent! Pinging? Change 'one' of the springs to the next heavier one and retest. That should fix it. Make sure the vac advance is setup to the manifold vacuum source also.

Remember, plug #1 on the dist tower is the one just past the adjustment door in the 10 o'clock possition (roughly). Firing order should be stamped on the intake incase you forget.

    Have fun!

Yeah its off 180. It was like that when I got it. So I just file the round shape off the rotor to fit in the square notch. Now since I have to play with the rotor I might as well fix it.

Thanks for all the feedbacks guys.
