...and I've never had a 4 speed car before. With the automatic, I've always unbolted the three converter bolts and the 6 on the engine/tranny.

Not sure what I'll have to unbolt to pull the engine with a 4 speed. Any words of wisdom?

If you're not going to pull the transmission with the engine, then you have to remove the driveshaft. It's a good idea to mark the driveshaft so its relation to the rear end is the same when you put it back in. If the shift stick is bolted to the shifter, unbolt the stick and leave the shifter and linkage on the tranny. If it's pressed in, depending on how tight it is, you may have to leave it and remove the shifter and linkage before removing the tranny. This may be awkward and you may have to lower the transmission some to get the bolts out. Disconnect the backup switch linkage. The switch can stay on, but don't forget to unplug the wires. Undo the speedometer cable. Disconnect the emergency brake cable and disengage it from the crossmember. The crossmember has to come out. Be sure to take a good look at your exhaust pipes and how they may or may not interfere with removing the crossmember. It kind of has to be angled diagonally across the body to finagle it out. Be sure to have the tranny secured to a transmission jack. Unbolt the tranny from the bellhousing and pull it out the back. Be careful to pull it out as straight as possible to avoid undue stress on the clutch plate. Disengage the clutch fork pushrod. You can leave the z-bar in and just swing the engine a little to disengage it from the block stud as you pull out the engine. Just don't forget to re-engage it on the way back in. I think that's about it. If I left anything out, which is probable, I'm sure someone will fill in the gaps.

MIKE #1 if you leave the trans in place(i dont) remenber that the trans input shaft is 6+inches long SO the engine has to go that far forward,,,,,,i dont think it will //////my thought is pull the trans frist //// this allows you to balance the eng better ,it is much easier all the way//to remove the trans support the eng under the pan remove the cross member/drive shaft/and linkage/dont forget the speedo cable and wiring as said above///then 4 bolts and it is out # 2 you can leave it on the eng a lot of guys do it is just a matter of what works best for you lots of luck///just take your time // pete

    Well...it's out

I pulled it. I left the tranny in...but I don't think I'll put it back in the same way it came out! It was a little difficuult pulling is off of the tranny input shaft, but ince that was over, it came right out. The whole process took about three hours including cleanup time. Not too bad.

Tomorrow I'll start teardown and see how bad the engine is. The best part about oday is...no skinned knuckles!!

Thanks for the advice above, guys. It'll especially come in handy on reinstall.
