I got a check mark for this question, but no one has answered in the wet behind the ears forum. I have a 70 Electra and 70 Wildcat with keys that used to work. I need to move them and need to know detailed instructions on how to get the column unlocked by removing the ignition switch. HELP!

It's been a few yeasr since I've done this, but I'll try to remember the process. Be certain to disconnect the battery.

    1. Remove the horn bar from steering wheel, should be a phillips screw on the backside of each wheel spoke.

    2. Disconnect any horn wires, then remove horn bar.

    3. There should be a round horn switch attached to front on wheel. I'm not sure if this is where the large "C"-clip and washer plate holding a wide flat spring is located or not. I know that is part of the set-up. Might be under the wheel itself, like I said, i'ts been a few years.

    4. You should now be looking at a large nut holding wheel onto steering shaft. It's probably 1 inch or so. Remove this nut.

    5. Now the fun begins. Using the steering wheel puller you previously obtained prior to starting this odyssey, attach the puller to wheel with three bolts, and turn the center puller bolt until wheel pops off shaft. You'll see how it works when attaching the puller.

    6. If I recall correctly, next, you need to remove the turn signal switch from inside the column. Should be two or three small screws, one may be partially hidden. BE CAREFUL if you are re-using switch. Disconnect any wires, and remove switch.

    7. Next, reach inside column, on top of ignition switch looking for the ignition switch retaining clip. Using a small flat screwdriver, push down on the retaining clip, and ignition should pop out. Replace with a good switch, and you're good to go.

Hopefully, that covers each step, if I've missed something, some one else can chime in.

One last thing, sometimes the shifter handle can bind against the steering column, which can make turning ignition switch a real bear.

    Good luck, hope I've helped.

Tom covered most of it. I posted some photos from the 70 Chassis manual in response to your original post in the "Wet Behind the ears" forum.
