Is there anything I need to be careful of. Where should I hook up the engine lift. Im doing this in my driveway so its on a pretty steep incline. Thanks for the help..
You can buy a lifting plate at many auto shops which has 3 holes in it. It screws down at the carb mount holes. I would buy a set of grade 8 bolts. You need to borrow or rent a cherry picker.
I have an engine lift in my garage. Is the plate like a one size fits all deal? The engine is a 300 2bbl from a 65 Skylark.
As far as I know it is. I own one and I recall it contemplates multi engine use. I use the center hole for the 455.
You can use 2 lengths of chain (and NOT puppy dog-type stuff either) available at cheapo depot. Then screw a bolt through a link and into a hole on the front of one head and diagonally across the engine and bolt it to a hole on the rear of the diagonal head. Do the same thing with the other chain so you've made an "X" across the top of the engine. Both pieces of chain should be same tension in the center when lifted up. Then grab hold of the chains with the picker and go. If it is on a steep incline, as you say, then be careful you don't let the thing roll back into the windshield.
On an incline? Chok them wheels! Also NEVER stick your head, hands, etc under the engine as its lifting and suspended. Pull the engine slow. EVERYONE always forgets one wire or line, and you don't wanna damage it. Also, the car will rise several inches before the engine comes off the mounts. Some newbies think the engine is stuck, but its just the suspension traveling up as you lift some 600 lbs off it. Good luck!! :TU:
Just lift the motor up, yank the chocks out and let the car roll out from under. That way you don't have to muscle the engine up the incline. Sorry, but you guys are killing me tonight. Good luck (seriously).
The entire front end of the car is gone. Will it roll back with out the engine attached to the trans?
I dont think doing this on an incline is the best idea Roll it out into the street onto level ground. The hoist with an engine dangling from it is not a fun thing to move......or try and stop now that you've got 600# of inertia tied to it. DEFINATELY have a plan for what you're going to do with the motor once its out. Engine Stand ?? Have it all assembled, have the bolts ready and tools etc. to gewt it on. If you havent bought a stand, get a GOOD one. Its maybe $20-$40 more than the cheap ones....but its a safety thing. Ask for help - get friends over. the more eyes and hands guiding it out the better.
$40 spent on an engine leveller is well worth it. You spend a LOT less time repositioning the engine/tranny combo, everything is much easier to move. Other than that, I suggest putting the car up on 4 jackstands. It's much easier to pull the tranny/engine when you can tilt the tranny down without hitting the floor.
Well Scott ?? HOW DID IT GO ?!?!?!?!?!? Did you get help ?? Last time I pulled an engine was up at Ken Lisk's house......when he put the call out for help, you cant imagine who showed up
I think I am just gonna put the tranny bolts back in and take the tranny and engine out together I couldnt pull it last night it was being a real big pain in the butt.
YAY IT'S ALL OUT!!!! No accidents to report everything went smoothly nothings broken. Took a few beers some and some friends but it all came out. Good day today.
