Quick question on PS whining/growling. I have a 70 GS 455 and am experiencing a growl/squeal when turning the wheel lock to lock. Only does this when I am at the far end of travel on either R or L lock (i.e. when it is close to either lock). The fluid does not have bubbles and is full when hot. Any ideas? could the PS belt be too loose or too tight? thoughts?? BDK
I would say a certain amount of chatter is normal at the locks. A worn or loose belt would be more likely to squeal. If you have never drained the PS fluid this would be a good excuse to do it. Use a mighty vac or turkey baster to get as much out as possible, refill, run for a few min while working the wheel left to right stop to stop a few times then repeat. This will get you about 2/3 to 3/4 of the fluid without much drama.
Thanks Ken. This is a newly rebuilt PS pump so it has new fluid in it already. I wouldn't call it chatter so much as loud squeal at the L and R limits.
If its a new pump or especially a new pump and gear box then it can take a BUNCH of lock to lock repetitions to fully purge the air. Does this have a new pulley as well? If so you may need to erode some of the paint out of it...
Yep, new pulley too.....I'll raise the front and lock to lock until I'm tired........hopefully that helps.....
I've had to do this first hand recently with a new ps box and pump. Kens spot on, eat your spinach, and go out and turn that thing lock to lock umpteen times and don't forget to check the fluid level periodically).
Thanks for the confirmation Shawn....will do what you and Ken recommended....I may look good with Popeye forearms afterall.... B
