Of a rear mount turbo set up. I have been looking at them and think they will be better for a street car set up. What do you guys think?

    Thanks Gary

I say heck no.... The STS style turbos take exhaust air back at the mufflers and then route turbocharged air up to the engine about 9 feet away. If this was a good design then it would be factory on many cars.... Turbos need oil to lubricate them and if you run a turbo above the valve cover then drainage is gravity fed. The Burton machine turbo kit is cheep and reliable, why not go with twin turbos. Keep the turbos tight to the engine and use water, methanol injection to inter-cool on a budget.

I would do twin rear mount. The oil is not a big deal. I would make an oil system in the back with a cooler just for the turbos. I think it would be cool on a street car because I would make more horse power per pound of boost. I will run pump gas so it would be a good deal. It would also lower the under hood heat alot.

    Just thinking out loud.

Sean, just being the devil's advocate here...if the Burton setup was unavailable, what then would your advice be?

I really like the rear mount twins the only drawback for me is the need for a fuel cell ( not my thing i need the trunk space for tools & tires @ the track). The oil supply & return would require a pump & line system that could be a little tricky. The clean simple look appeals to me also the use of conventional headers the bit of boast drop from rear to front would be fine with me as the air charge temp would drop as well.If i could do it while keeping my stock tank i would really look into it if the funds where available.

I think there is really no significant performance loss in a rear setup. I have in fact considered an over axle single setup, and still may offer it when times are better.

My personal feeling though, is that having a turbo setup you can't see takes away from much of the fun. It doesn't do anything for et, but the respect one gets when popping the hood to reveal a nasty looking turbo setup is something to consider, if you cruise, or attend car shows.

Then again, maybe you want it hidden.

That is part of the reason I wanted to go with it, My dad has a loud, in your face 455, I thought it would be neat to have another extream.

Do you think it would be better to put twin turbos or a single in the back?

You would have a lot of pipe under the car with twin mounts. With a single mount you can use the track for one exhaust to route the return line. There is nothing wrong with a single turbo. That is what they use on the GN.

I am thinking about a single turbo, I dont see how it could have more lag and it would be much more simple to make fit. Has anyone ran a rear mounted turbo set up that can give me some insight.

    Thanks Gary

I have seen multiple magazine articles on the STS rear mount set-up and it seems to have been engineered properly-but that is the key. You need to know what housings, compressor wheel, etc. to make it work.

Looks like there's alot of certified dealers for the STS system. I looked at my local dealers website and he has a 99 z28 putting 536 horsepower to the rear tires with the stock long block and stock cam. Not bad.

If your going to try and make rear mount kit the key too being succesfull is to run a turbine housing that is alittle smaller and run the biggest external gate you can, this will help with spool up and will allow for good flow out.

We have a few Rear mount cars out here, one new GTO with just a basic STS setup and it runs low 11s on drag radials with an automatic.
    Food for thought.
