This is not for a Buick. But soon might be. It's for buddies SB Mopar Alum. Edelbrock RPM heads. He has used the heads a year. Last night he went to do an oil change and found metal shavings in the oil pan. Upon investigating the cause was the dampers cutting into the shim pack. The dampers are free floating for .180" at installed hieght of 1.88". It looks like the dampers pounded the shims cutting into them so bad the inside of top shim is curling up lifting the valve seal off the valve guide. The springs are rated for .550 lift. The cam is well below these specs. I can't see the reason behind using dampers in the first place. Has anyone heard of this problem before? Ray
This happens if you are using the soft copper valve shims. We only use the hardened HP shims for all our work. If your springs came with dampers, you can remove them but I would not recommend it. The spring maker put them there to control spring harmonics. You can take them out and polish the ends smooth with a cartridge roll and reinstall them.
