I've seen the post by tdacton about his power window problems and I guess I'm having similiar problems, but not exactly. My car has a mind of its own. One window will work or maybe 2 and then another might not and another does... its very erratic. I've even popped out the master switch and used wire to jump the connections. On certain windows at certain times all i get is sparks. On others the wire will power the motor and the window moves. All of the wiring is good as far as I know and the motors are newly rebuilt. I originally thought it was the switch. You can see a big blue spark come from inside the switch when the window decides not to work. So, it depends on the mood of the car if I'm going to have all the windows down, or just 3.. or maybe 2. And I hope it doesn't rain! Would the relay have anything to do with this? Where can I start looking?

    Thanks

    Bob

Sounds like the motors are drawing excessive current.
Make sure your gears are in good condition and tracks/rollers are well lubricated. Most of the time the problem is frozen rollers or misaligned windows.

george, thanks for the reply... the windows are nearly perfect... the rollers are lubed up and everything works nice and smooth.. this is really weird. If the relay was bad, it wouldn't discriminate which windows aren't working would it? I would assume that all would stop working? any other ideas?

You state "as far as I know"

    Hmmmmm, that can be dangerous!

Well, based on my experience, the power window motors are basically indestructible unless the car has been flooded. So, no way to "rebuild" the motors. Maybe to replace brushes but that would be uncommon. I have removed many, many, many (that is a big number) and all were bench tested. Never had one that was bad! Just got done installing some motors from a 70 Electra and they were perfect except for dry grease.

I would remove the motors and verify gear teeth and grease condition. I would then run the motors on your bench using an old pw motor wiring(two wires w/plug) so you can verify smooth operation. While operating them, use a small hammer to tap on the case to see if you have a loose winding.

From all the cars I have removed power windows or stripped at the local yards, the only problem I have ever found was the regulators having a bad spot on them where "somehow" the gear teeth were worn down to nothing and the motor would just spin. I think your problem sounds like a loose winding in your motors. Maybe swap them out for another set.

Just as a counter point, I have had two motors go out on me now due to the brushes wearing out. If you can get new/lesser used brushes, usually out of a donor motor, they are pretty easy to replace w/a soldering iron. I just had to my driver one the other week.
