ok i was coming home from work the other night and i had to do some menovering to get into a spot... when i looked on the ground there was a large path of power steering fluid. i added some more then took it around the block.. by the time i got back the wheel had that jerky feeling to it. but the resivour was full... there is also a squeeling noise coming from the motor.. like a pully or belt ot something.. could this be part of the problem?.. the next morning i tightend some hoses and its fine now, but the sueeling noise still goes. any sugestions?

Drain it and refill it using Lucas uil power steering treatment. Good stuff works good. Cost like $7. I used it in my T-Type with good results.

    power steering pump

sounds like bearing noise . when it gets bad enough , the pump will seize up . try chris's suggestion first before replacing / rebuilding the pump .

i may have the same problem...

i seem to be having a similar problem...i get the belt squeal, but no leaking...the squeal has been getting worse--when i first noticed it, it only did it for a couple seconds, but now it's almost constant...

i think the pump is dying...

ok, now this may be a dumb question but i'm asking it anyway...if i remove the power steering belt completely, will it cause any harm to the steering box? (other than losing my power steering of course) i'm pretty fed up with the squeal, and until i get a replacement, i'd rather expend the extra effort to turn the wheel...

You will have a couple of sore guns thats for sure. I don't know if you will hurt the steering box or not, but trying to steer a power box without the power is quite the chore.

    hunh?!?

first, i don't know why i posted twice, i only remember doing it once...gotta stop sniffin glue in the mornin... :Brow:

anyhoo, after i posted, i checked my ps and alternator belts...turns out they both had a little too much play in them, particularly the alt belt...after tightening, the squeal went away...go figure... :Dou:

but a few things are still happening, namely:

    1) when i rev the engine pretty good (in park) i hear a loud whine, i wonder if this is the power steering pump, not sure in the least...i have to get on it pretty good, a little more rpm than i like when it's in park, actually (but i don't have a tach, so i can't give a number, sorry)

    2) i grabbed the pulley, with the belt on and tight, and can move the shaft in and out just a little bit, like maybe a millimeter...is that enough to conclude it's a bad bearing or is that amount of play normal, or is any amount of play normal?

    3) after tightening the belt, the steering felt a little tighter, in a good way...and i never felt it resist my left turn...i don't know if my terminology is even remotely correct, but sometimes when going around a bend (as opposed to a right angle, more like a curve) at low speeds (20-35mph), i feel/hear a grinding/humming from the front end...that seems to be gone, although it may be too early to make that conclusion...

so, unless i get contradictory responses (all are welcome) i'm assuming that my pump might be a bit tired and ready to be retired, but it's not an imminent disaster situation yet...
