I'm an American road-trip enthusiast!!!!!! As such, this is one of my favorite road trip pictures. Indiana is a beatiful state. If you've never back-roaded it in a Yank Tank ragtop, you've missed out.
American Volunteer group, China, 1942. (Flying Tigers), aircraft flown are Curtiss Hawk 81A-2 models (known in US service as the P-40B) Plane in the foreground piloted by Charles Older, 18 victory ace in WWII with the AVG and USAAF. Also the presiding Judge in the Charles Manson murder trial
BWAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHA^^^^^^That is quality!!! oh, and driving through ohio was more entertaining than driving through indiana...in my opinion (on my way to chicago from ny)
Lotus 49, 1967. Powered by a 3.0L Ford engine called the DFV (double, four valve). Basically a V-8 made from two four cylinder engines. Winningest engine in F1. Driver: Graham Hill, father of F1 Driving Champion Damon Hill, and himself a two time F1 World Driving Champion, killed in a plane crash, 1975 (Helmet is indicative of Rowing, a passion of Hill's)
Lotus 49, 1967. Driver: Jimmy Clark, the "Wee Scot". Two time World Driving Champion for Lotus, Indy 500 winner for Lotus, master of F1. Killed in F2 race at Hockenheim, 1968 (speculation says he was hit in the face by a bird and lost control. Note lack of seatbelts in these cars. 190+mph, and no seatbelts. Because of Clark's death, seatbelts were introduced, not that it matters when you hit a tree broadside at 160 mph while driving a tin can filled with avgas. Jim Clark died at 32) Great pic, especially considering it was 1967. This was a skilled photographer. Clark is my all-time favorite driver. Second choice: Dan Gurney
