Which is the best aftermarket posi unit for street/strip use?

    I say Eaton.

I don't know what rear you have, but if they make a Detroit Locker for it,I would put that at the top, then the Eaton clutch style posi,& go down from there.Yukon makes a copy of the Eaton unit, but I have seen a few of those cases fail,so I'm not sure about the quality of the metal they use to cast those.

I had a customer have a Eaton posi fail also...:( We are trying to get it warrantied right now. Shattered the side of the posi unit case...WOW!

True tracs are supposed to be pretty darn strong also. IF your racing you can not beat the FULL SPOOL...lol.

NO slip Power trax should be good as it eliminates the spider gears (THIS IS THE WEAK SPOT IN ALL CARRIERS.. PERIOD.) When these are installed correct AND NEW ...they are very good working units for power output.
This is why the Auburn unit in the GM cars had the super duty 4 pinion posi (LSD) unit. 2 side gears and 4 spider gears spread out the toque over many more teeth surface areas. Common sense :idea2:

There were others POWER LOCK units used in the Dana 60, old 55 passenger & Vette car drop outs and other AMC high performance cars used. GM never really attached themselves to the power lock after the Olds & Pontiac gasser monster drop out rears...That is too bad.:Dou: :ball:

When picking a LSD weight what your car will be doing most of its rolling life...More track time or more street life... Do you need a quiet unit ? Super strong unit? A cost effective unit? Only you can pick what is correct for you . Not everyone has unlimited funds so pick what fits.

Thanks for the info, upon closer inspection of my rear, it seems the spiders are OK but the side gears are pitted. Can you replace just the side gears? Any body have side gears avail? Steve

The No-Slip & Lok-Rite units for the open carriers are good if you want a make a posi for your cruiser, but they will not last very long in a strip car,as they begin to wear. The factory 4-pinion units are better than the 2-pinion units, but I have seen plenty of those fail as well,& replacement parts are not easy to find,so I woul keep those for the resto/cruiser cars as well.
If you do get an Eaton or a Yukon copy, they still work pretty good,& are hard to beat.Personally,if it is a street/strip car,I would take the new style carbon-fiber clutches out & pitch them.Get the original style solid knurled steel clutches & shim them as tight as you can in there. You can actually eliminate the 4 preload springs,& make a tight, yet long-lasting posi unit.
If Eaton started to cheapen their casting qualities,it will start to show if there are more reports of broken/failed cases.
The TruTrac helical gear units are nice for a street or road course car,but are not intended for drag use.
