Would a posi traction come standard on cars in the 60's?
    example:

    '65 skylark
    '70 skylark

    Thanks for any info

No and Yes, it was a factory option that you could order for most models when the car was first purchased - and some models did have it as standard equipment, ie: Grand Sport or GS models. :TU:

Is there a way to find out just by a vin # or do we need the build sheet?

    thanks again

I believe this is how the boring test goes. Put your rear end up in the air on jack stands. Either put it in neutral and turn the tires by hand, or put it in drive and let it idle. I believe you dont have posi if one wheel is spinning really fast and the other is barely moving or spinning. I call this the boring test because the fun test takes less time, & effort. This is called a burnout. :3gears: Goodluck. :TU:

They publish a list of which cars came standard with posi rears in their dealer parts manuals just as an example. But it is just like Rivman says: in general, GS cars were standard posi whether they be Rivs or Skylarks. Skylarks were standard non posi. But you could order a nonstandard posi rear end car with a posi. As you guess you could order a standard posi car with a non posi.

Build sheet should have it listed, never found mine.

There is usually a metal tag attached under one of the rears cover bolts that says limited slip.

    Stamping on the axle tube?

Did you check the date code and stamping on the rear axle tube? There should be a date stamp and an "O" with an "X" inside of it to denote a posi rear axle. At least it shows this in the 66 Service Manual.
    Hope this helps.
