Posi load test

I rebuilt the posi and wanted to check to see if I had it tight enough, so I put a 3 ft crow bar on one side (bound it up in the axle studs) and put another 3 ft bar in the other axle studs. I wasnt sure about how to use a torque wrench on this :Do No: Anyway I had to lean on it a fair bit to get it to break free as Im 6 foot 3 and over 250 pounds my idea of a fair bit is speculative. Im guessing I have the posi set up pretty tight I used new clutches and installed the yellow springs, and lubed it up before I set it in the case for the test.

Does anyone know what the appropriate procedure is for checking the posi for the proper load, I can take it out and change it easily as the 12 bolt is not in the car and on stands. Any help would be appreciated :Smarty:

For the "big cars" in 1967:

    1. Trans in Neutral.

    2. Raise one wheel off the floor, block the other.

    3. Remove wheel cover, place torque wrench on lug nut.

    4. Disregard breakaway torque, observe torque required to continuously turn the wheel smoothly. If reading is less than 30 lb. ft., unit should be disassembled serviced.

Is there to high of an amount of torque to turn the wheel? :Brow:

    bench test

Usually a bench test works the best with a cut axle with a socket weld to that. then you can use a torque wrench and test it. On the car with the wheel on and using a lug bolt will give you a general idea if the posi is good or bad definetly but the lugs are not in the center of the axle so you will have an incorrect reading and you also have a bunch more leverage making it much easier to break that units clutch pack. use it for what it is worth a general inspection of the unit being good or bad. If you can turn it with the wheel on and your hands fairly easy it will probably need alot of help. if it breaks lose hard with hands it will be a good runner for a while and if you can not break it with your hands it is in pretty darn good condition or someone welded it...LOL. I've recently installed one in my car, and if I lift one tire off the ground, put it in neutral; I can easily spin the wheel that's in the air. In what direction should I proceed to have this taken care of? Can I rebuild it myself somehow, or are there people who rebuild these things or any other suggestions? It is the 9 3/8 unit for the 71-73 B-body Buicks. Will I damage it by driving with it being this lose?

    wheel spin

wow, that easy. well you should first see if the parts can be gotten (clutches) sometimes the bigger car have a lighter preload to the posi clutch pack. Can you get the car to light them up? Like I said the best test is a bench test. You can remove the carrier your self and reinstall as long as you keep all the shims on each side where they belong upon reassembly. Just mark they before removal.

Damage... well usually it will just act like an open and the clutches will heat up a bit but no not terriblely...It has been going for how long aready so if you need to drive to a shop I am sure you are more than safe. I can rebuild them as long as the parts are available. If you just want it cleaned , new clutches(you paying for them and supplying them) 50-75 re use good spider gears etc. I can call Randy's and see if the supply them cheaper -dealerships sometimes even have stuff laying around and you could get it for cheap too.

I guess new clutches is what we need here; you mentioned Randy might have them, or dealerships might have them; any Chance to find you what part number I might be looking for?

    Many thanks for the help..
