Snake, I think you did good for going blind. Meaning you had no way of checking your work as you went. MY thoughts you did real good, reminds me of the work Riv64 did a couple of years ago. Wisk I knew how to link his pictures and the numbers to this thread. Looks like whe might finally have a good nailhead porting thread:Smarty
P.S. I know there are only a few poeple on this web site that are interested in nailhead performance and porting them, but mabey this can help a few that want to try.

Yes his name was Roger, he actually helped me out by posting his work and giving me the best tip, refeshments (beer). Doc is another that knows his stuff, but Rogers numbers were very impessive. Next to all the best nailhead porters out there Roger was better than their numbers, we are talking Gessler and Magnotti and Faso. Mondello (RIP) had some real impressive numbers. Also I agree if this tread can help out other guys to do this so that they can spend their money on otrher things like a better cam carb or exhaust system. Pictures tell a hundred words!

OK, after talking with Tom T once a month for a hour each time about what it takes to get a nail to really go he got me interested in how to get air into these nails. So it kinda became a off and on project. Mostly spring and fall. To hot in the shed in the summer and cold in the winter. But here is where my practice head is at with the stock numbers next to it with a 1.94 and 3 angle valve job
This is with a 1.94 valve. 1.94 pinch point and got the velocity at the ssr down to between 360 and 380 at the ssr. Who knows how it will work untill I get my car together with new parts this spring-early summer. I am hoping to keep low end and improve the top end. As Tom always says "I guess we will find out"pictures to come, photobuckett is down This was flowed on a 4.2inch bore adaptor. I also use a homemade intrance adaptor out of a 2x4 to kinda mimic the intake manifold. I dont use clay on it. I worked very slow and tested this runner 97 times.I am sure if one of the guys that do this for a liveing spent this much time on one therte is no telling what they could end up with.

    Nice!!
Bob, it looks like you took down the bump on the left side of that intake port. I did that too. Do you feel that is a safe mod, in regards to improving flow, and not getting too close to water? Is there water even under that bump?

On my last build, I wanted a close-to-stock 'baseline' motor. I only did port matching and a blend/smooth in the valve pocket.
I started another set of heads with a little more material removal.... including that intake bump and widening at the bolt holes.
Wish I had a flow bench!

Walt, when this thread started I didnt want to sound like a expert because I am not. So ...to give you the best answer I can YES...there is water everywhere. Do I think you should of cut down that hump?...Yes. Anyway to smooth the air into the bowl especially at the ssr.
I have some more ideas I plan on trying this year when I get time. It would be great to get more out of it and keep it streetable. That Is my goal. The runners are so small for the cubic inch, and we havent even talked about the exh. much yet, it is really tough to get past a certain point in my opion:Do No:

Doc..the 2 containers in the middle are a 2 part compound you mix and pour in and when it gets hard you can pull it out. You have to spray a mold wax release fist or yo will have a mess. I will get the name of the company for you

Snake, how far was you able to get into the exh. manifold?

I used a product from fiberlay; my release agent was vaseline thinned with a little bit of rubbing alcohol brushed in the ports I think.

You nailhead guys have a tough road, it hurts just looking at that exhaust port.

Wow, wont too much polishing help the fuel pool though? I heard leaving a somewhat course surface will help the fuel mix with the air better, especially on this engine.

Yep,,, a mirror finish will do that,,, but what I have seen in the pics so far is ''just right''.... the swirl marks are a lot better than the factory rough cast finish.....and if you make a opening bigger by just a few thousanths , it will flow a lot more.....

I would love to see what all the guys racing nailheads back then were doing to for the "port and polish". As in Ivoe, Max B. nance. I think I read once that Max.B was the builder on alot of the engines. Anyway, back to the grinding table:Smarty:

Interesting thread. what porting tools are you using for the deep cutting, bowl work, and swirl polishing?

I use a 1/8 cable drive grinder,,, and a 1/4 air die grinder, with 6 in. long t/c burrs.... and a summit porting kit.... with the sandpaper rolls... they work really good.....

Not sure, I know it was about 2 hrs a day or more for about a couple of weeks, or if I would read or see something new I would have at again!

Snake, nice work. I love this kinda stuff:TU: I am really looking at your exh. manifolds and how you worked the exh. exit. Cant wait to hear your numbers. Any idea when you are going to find out? Also that is a good finsh on them. I dont think you are to polished. And you do want the exh. polished:TU:
