I am curious about the Pontiac rods. There is/was a thread in "parts for sale" about Pontiac SD rods for BBB's. The seller had them slightly narrowed. Is that all it takes? Mad Dog Racing (big e-bay company) sells Pontiac rods made by CAT, brand new, with bolts, for $219. Is this an easy way to get good compression w/o cutting the block like crazy? They are .025" longer (correct me if I am wrong). Does the stock pin work? Is the big end similar to the Buick crank if it is being turned anyway? Thanx.
If I remember correctly, you have to take .030"-.031" off the sides of the big end. I think the pin end needs to be honed to fit the Buick pin also. For a block that hasn't been decked yet, a .025" longer rod would be great!! Less to have decked.
Hello Man, that sounds great, like a cheap rod/piston set up. the extra machine work may be equal (I am guessing) to having a bunch taken off of the deck & possible intake modifications. Punch in "Pontiac rods" on e-bay, there are also some really nice ones for $319. Thanx for the reply Scott.
P. Rods Scott, Be careful w/ the cat rods. Several of mine friends have gotten less than good quality. Regards,
Personally, if I was going to go with the Pontiac rods - I'd go with the Eagle H-beam rods. I'm not totally convinced that the 'SIR' type rods are a cost effective improvement of just having your stock rods rebuilt with good bolts.o No: Now, if you didn't have a good stock set....that might be different. Machine work on the Pontiac rods would about offset the cost of decking the block. Sure would be nice to 'convince' Eagle and the others to machine some rods to Buick specs and give us a direct part #.:TU:
