    I have a friend I work with has a Ponitac and needs some information on his engine, here is what he wrote; vin # on block 29p316404 vin# on car 276579p155408 you said you have a bud that might be able to see if this is a numbers matching block for my GP thanxs AL.

    In Europe we say Pontiac, instead of Ponitac (but hey, we talk funny :laugh: )

    vin # on block 29p316404 vin# on car 2 76 57 9 p 155408

    2 = Pontiac

    76 = Grand Prix

    57 = 2 drs HT coupe

    9 = Model year 1969

    P = Pontiac, Michigan factory

    155408 = Pontiac, MI production number for model year 1969
    started at 100 011

    That engine VIN doesn't match the car VIN, can't find out what engine it is, and from which car it came. Maybe your mate can search for the casting number and engine number number on the block ?

    Engine number should be in the same spot as the engine VIN.

    1969 Pontiac GP came with manual or auto transmissions:

    Engine codes:

    WX = 400 manual 4 barrel

    WF = 428 manual 4 barrel

    WL = 428 manual 4 barrel

    XH = 400 auto 4 barrel

    XF - 428 auto 4 barrel

    XG = 428 auto 4 barrel

    YF = 400 auto 2 barrel

    Hi AL. In the code "29p316404" the "2" stands for Pontiac, the "9" for model year (1969) and "P" stands for Pontiac Assembly Plant. The rest of the number is the cars VIN sequental number which indicates a non-number matching engine just as Erik mentioned. Hope this helps out.

    Marco,

    I once won a 25 Guilder (about US$ 12.00 in those days) bet about the right name: a guy in a bar claimed it was GranD Sport. I told him it was Gran Sport, but he refused to believe me, he even owned a GranD Sport earlier in life...... so no doubt he knew what he was talking about.

    Next week it was me entering the bar with a pile of my Buick books, won the bet and had people reading Buick books all night long. The bar now even has a Buick sign up on the wall, I'll take a photo someday and post it on the board :TU:

    Let's see if I can bet with him again about a Gran National..... :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

    What year and model Pontiac?

    Bear in mind from mid 64 (?) to sometime in 66 (?) GTOs the engine was not VIN'd to match the vehicle VIN.
