    Yeah, they also did Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson.
    It was a continuation of the Sacajawea golden dollar line, and that went back to the Susan B.Anthony dollar that looked like a quarter, only bigger. Had the same finish.
    Now that I think about, I seem to remember that Washington was the first in the new golden dollar line, but that’s a guess.
    I used to have a few soda vending machines back in the 90’s and 2000’s and I remember the first coin receiver that took the dollar. Probably still have it! LOL

    Got a bunch of those gold 1 $ coins. Was on a trip through the Chicago area and the automated toll machines spit them out as change. They are in the bottom of my change jar and every time I cash in the coins have to be careful not to dump them down the slot in the machine at the bank. Lost a couple that way.

    Every year around the holidays old money shows up. That's when you see a lot of old coins in circulation. Maybe old people sitting on rolls or something. Lots of old bills, too.

    You guys are kidding me; you've never seen them? Wow...:eek:
    In the numismatic world (coin collectors) we're lead to believe that Americans hated the Dead President's series. They made them from 2007 to 2016, I have them all from both the Denver and the Philly mints; the San Francisco mint only produces numismatic grade stuff, like proofs and precious metal coins. I have a few of them as well, but I collect circulating grade stuff and not proofs. The last coin made was Reagan, and from what I understand there won't be others. The key prerequisite was that you had to be an American president and dead for at least 3 years before they'd stamp a coin of you. So there will likely never be one of Trump, Obama, Clinton or any of the Bush's, but when Carter passes on, they might make one of him to complete the count to Reagan.

    Those coins are unique because the mintmark and the year are inscribed on the edge, nowhere else. You can buy whole "bullion packs" of 500 pieces from some private outfit that isn't affiliated with the US Mint because the Mint has been trying to sell these things off in order to recoup taxpayer's money. Ostensibly the 1 dollar coin was supposed to be used and introduced through the Post Office and subway systems, apparently that coin is all their toll or vending machines would accept. The experiment has failed miserably, as the American public never warmed up to the coin instead of the Washington Greenback. This series was supposed to change all of that, and it didn't work.

    The only ones that should go for $2 on line are in mint state (roll fresh) with no scratches or marks and in full colour; the rest should only be face value. Proofs, (triple struck with frosted devices) can fetch upwards of $5 to $10 depending on who's on it.

    Now for the shameless plug;

    I did a series of articles on these for the Edmonton Numismatic Society's magazine, the Planchet, a couple of years ago. If you're interested these coins or others, google "edmontoncoinclub.com" and check out our magazine, I think you'll find it worthwhile.

    I had got a few of them from a parking lot machine in Gatlinburg TN...a few years back. I think Jefferson was on them.

    Dollar coins that resemble/near replicate a quarter in size have all failed. Do they (us mint) still make the Eisenhower dollar perhaps in proof set only?

    Nope, the Eisenhower was last made in 1978. Then came the Susan B. Anthony, another bust. Then in an attempt to emulate the success the Canadians had with the Loonie, the US Mint tried the Sacajawea dollar. The Presidential series came next, and now it's back to Sacajawea and Native American motifs on the reverses. In each case, the coin proved unpopular and unwanted. Most of the recent mintages are low and sold to collectors only, so they'll never be worth anything.
    The reason the Ike dollar failed was because people didn't want dinner-plate sized coins in their pockets or purses. The same thing happened back starting in the 1880s with the Morgan dollar and in 1921 with the Peace dollar. People hated them. The Morgans wound up getting sold off to Vegas for use in the gambling industry, and even there they fizzled. A person can buy high grade Morgan dollars from the 1880s reasonably cheap on eBay. The US Mint just hasn't faced up to the fact that the American public hates dollar coins.

    As an attempt to make something of the Susan B. Anthony dollar, the company I work for obtained a whole bag of 1979 D dated ones and then plated them with the aureate plating we later made the loonies out of. I still have one of those. We eventually made all the Loonie blanks for use in Canada from 1987 to 2001, we also invented and pioneered the process for aureate bonded nickel plating.

    But seriously Marc, that's really cool........ I remember when the Sacajawea dollars came out and our 2 little car washes and some vending machines in town scrambled to get converted. I thought it was a dumb thing and a flash in the pan even when I was that young. I think they all went into those vending machines and never came back, because after about 6 months I never saw them again except for the 2 I saved and still have.

    1978 for the Eisenhower dollar. Never realized it was that long ago. What about the Kennedy half? Remember occasionally getting one in change, but again that was probably a long time ago too. Kennedy halves retained some silver into the seventies. Did have a starter collection in the mid seventies, with a fair amount of silver pre '64 coinage, but sister raided it for candy money and that was that. She was too young. Didn't know any better.

    They're still making the Kennedy halves, I think I have them all to 2017.
