Need some help finding the RIGHT plug wires for my GS. I installed new motor with stage 2 heads, all MSD ignition components from Summit, with billet distributor. They sent BB Chevy MSD red wire set with straight plug boots. when pushed on they push against one another. Someone suggested 90 degree boots but I don't think they will clear??? Another recommended adjustable??? Any help to point in the right direction. o No: No solid core wires used with MSD 6AL box. THANKS, JEFF
First the wires they sent are for BB Chevy, so the lengths are a little off. Second, the boots look a little strange hitting one another, there has to be a better fitting set of wires. The tech at summit said, "Nobody makes a set of custom made Buick wires. Buy the 90 degree set they should fit." Just don't want to do the 2 week long back and forth, you know!! Thanks, Jeff
The ones on my GS are numbered for a BB chevy - part # 31373. I just bent them 'a little' to angle the boots away from each other. My set fits good. A little more slack in a couple wires would have been better...
Jeff, Get some 135 degree boots. They fit real well on Buicks. I run Taylors. Also, as far as length, get the kit where you cut to fit and install your own ends. It's pretty easy and you get to spend an evening working on you car.
Accel 8.8mm 300+ Racing wires work vey well with the MSD 6 variable boot universal kit. Or get it for a Small Chebby with HEI. Kelly
AMEN Brother. :TU: I don't understand why so many people are afriad of doing "custom" plug wires. Its one of the easiest things you can do to a car. Several companies make the 135 (or 45) degree plug boots. Just pick what you like and get the universal kit...simple. In MOST cases the universal kits are cheaper as well. I have a "universal" set of Moroso Ultra 40's with 135 degree plug boots on their way to me right now. :TU:
He's already spent prolly $60 bux or more.....just bend them like Marco said. Tey're good wires and the BB Chevy set IS the closest that MSD offers to fitting our cars Look at 5&7.....had 1&3 bent too but they must have turned themselves to kiss
Althogh the big big block chevy wires will work , a set for big block mopar is closest in length if you dont want to make customs . (Distributor in the front) give it a try next time good luck with it George
Thanks for all the input guys. I wanted to have some opinions from the guys who have been down the "wire" road before. As for spending the money on the wires---the person at Summit already authorized the return of the unused wires they sent. So I just need to select the ones I want. Only thing is most other wires are 8mm not 8.5. I need to go home and get on the phone with Summit and find out who has a universal set with 135 degree boots, in black (pref), with about an 8.5mm wire. Thanks for the help, just trying to make under the hood look excellent!!! The engine is the "New Stage 2 ready!!" Under the 400/430/455 race section of the board, in case you would like to see what we got... We need to post a more recent photo. Thanks, Jeff :TU:
I bought a set of 90 and 135 do-it-yourself Taylors and used half of each on my engine. I ran the wires forward and in front of the valve covers. I'm not sure how well this would work on stage 2 heads. o No:
I run the BBC Msd wires. The boots will bend for clearance off of one another. I have not had any problems with them.
Howdy I just ran the Taylor custom wire set on my 72. love them! I also ran the made for you hold down kit that replaces the valve cover hold down bolts. the wires almost look like a factory set. Mark
Okay, I could be wrong here, and it certainly doesn't have anything to do with the topic at hand, but isn't that a picture of the passenger side of the motor, in which case we are looking at cylinder 2,4,6,8? If not, then my motor is running backwards... Ohh, and I just left my big block Mallory Sidewinder plug wire boots touch... That's not bad, is it?
