Aced a super deal on a brand new Mallory Hyfire 6ez system - I know I'll have to re-time the motor but will I need to go with a colder than stock plug as well? the mallory instructions don't address that topic. Anyone running a similar stock 350 setup with a mallory or msd unit? Only other real engine mod I've done so far is built a Pertronix distributor to replace the old points.

    Scott,
What plug are you running now? Don't see why you would need to re-time the engine if the distributor is set up correctly now. You might want to open your plug gaps some. .045 is a good gap to run for most, but you can experiment with larger gaps if you like. Likewise you can also try a colder plug if you like. Run the coldest plug you can without fouling problems.

I've found typically the ignition boxes advance from where you had it before the box was added, though most of my experience has been with Jacobs systems. Might just open the gaps up on my existing plugs to see how they burn. I'm sure it'll be a different effect on a small block 350 than I've gotten on my 440 Mopar though.

The box shouldn't advance the spark at all. Just open the plug gaps, that's what I'd do. If it is multiple spark discharge like an MSD box, you may be able to go down one heat range, and the plugs will stay clean. That's what I found with the MSD Digital 6. I opened my plug gaps up to .050, and then .060. Car ran the same, so I finally went to .045. I read somewhere that gaps over .050 usually aren't worth much if anything as far as performance went.

    I've read that myself actually.
I'm running stock heat range plugs now at .030 gap - motor is largely stock except for the pertronix distributor I built for it. I've only put about 200 miles on the car since its tune up so I'll open 'em up to .040 once the box is wired up.
