Is 60 thousands too much? I think it is or was. I set everything at a fat 40 but can and will re-gap if needed. I do have an aftermarket coil but.........
If you have a GM HEI they used to be at .060 for plugs I think this is in about 1975. But I think that you can use a .040- .050 gap and be ok. Also if the plug was meant to have a .060 gap you might want to leave the gap at .060. If you had to bend the J hook on the plug a lot the plug wont work well. You should have the J hook as straight as possible to the electrode. If you want a .040 or .045 gap you may need to find a different plug. I think the number used to be R45TSX for the .060 plug and the R45 TS plug was a .045 gap. Hope this helps later, Guy
Yes, AC used to use that designation for the bigger gap, but they changed. It went from R45TSX to R45TS6. In any case I'll be using the NGK UR55 soon. It is pregapped at .059. According to NGK, you can open or close the gap .008, and the plug will work fine. Right now, I have a set of Champion RV15YC4's gapped at .050, and my MSD Digital 6 fires them easily.
Well I will gap them back. It ran funky when she first fired up this year. It reved fine in neutral but missed bad in gear / under load. So I messed with lots of crap. re gaped plugs, new wires, check n cleaned cap n rotor up, removed the extra 1/2 in carb spacer I added. went back to ported vacuum. But it ended up being the fuel filter. I was thinking of just removing the stock one in the carb and run a big can filter with 50 times more filtering.
re-gaped at 60, back to manifold vacuum and she runs great. But is gonna get parked under the tree again for a while. Even with 900 gas leaks fixed, well tuned and not eve using the whole weight of my foot, I could only muster 15 MPG. I drove easy as heck. I need at least 18 to make her a daily driver. I must go back to my old reliable V6 T5 Firebird. It hard to resist 27-28 driving as fast as I want.
