ok, I know Eastwood has a metal blackening system for sale and I believe Palmetto Enterprises has something too but I haven't been able to find any more info. basically I'm looking to plate things like the control arm bolts and other hardware the correct black color (phosphate I think or it is zinc :Do No: thats why I'm here asking you guys). I'd rather not send it out but do it myself. Does anyone have any information on how to do this, or "kits" to buy so I can do this at home? Thanks. :TU:

I have a few of their kits, and have been pleased with the results. :TU:

Most of the suspension bolts were finished with black oxide. It's not very durable, but it can be clear coated, or periodically oiled for better weather resistance.
For that shiny- silver color, use the zinc plating kit. It will add a thicker coating than the black oxide process. And MUCH more durable. Caswell also offers a black and a gold dye which can be used over the zinc coating. The gold dye supposedly looks like a gold cad finish.
The Caswell kits generally give you larger quanities, and sometimes better components than the Eastwood kits. Do some comparisons before you buy! :Smarty:
You can also buy new hardware....I'd recommend Ground Up

Much of their hardware even has head markings identical to the originals.

There's an even better selection of NEW hardware avail from
    www.AMKproducts.com

I tried powdercoating bolts, but it usually gets too thick and clogs up the threads.

I used the black oxide process from Caswell, but they will rust again. The zinc and blackening process is what I would recommend.

Walt, I have a few I will have to replace. Other than that The hours spent tracking down all the individual hardware I think I can refinish mine. Dave K told me he uses a little clear on his Oxide to protect it. I take it the clear in their kit did not work for you ? Is the Zink and Blackening Caswell or Eastwood product ?

    Thanks

Here is the dirt cheap way that has great results and I swear lasts longer than the plating. Get Krylon Ultra Flat Black. You cannot tell the difference from plating. And best of all the parts never leave your hands so they never get mixed up and you spend weeks trying to remember where they all go. I had an old can of the stuff and looked for a new one and it is sold as Krylon Camoflage Paint Ultra Flat Black. I saw the New Style at Pep Boys.

I agree with Dave. I use Krylon Ultra Flat Black over my new black oxide bolts to protect them from minor surface rust. You can even wipe some light oil on them to make them look oiled.

I have used SEM satin trim black for that sort of black oxide look
    on a few bolts .. ....2 light coats ..
