Drove the my 87 GN to the nationals with my father in 1988. Hell, he wouldn’t let me drive the car he loved that GN. PM your address I’ll send you the picture if you want it.
Here are a couple of other race cars in the pits (full disclosure, I can't remember for sure but this may have been '87 instead of '88):
That was the only time I ever attended. Kevin and I took his 70 GS 455 there. We met Brad Conley and his dad.I have pictures of Kevin's car parked next to the prototype and black 71 GSX.
My first Nationals in BG, the weather was perfect the whole nats! Drove my 87 GN with just 4,000 miles on it 22 mpg at mostly 75 mph and went 13:90s at the bend
Somewhere we have VHS video of the drive down with dad to the 87 Nationals and walking thru show and track. Have to find it.
Don’t remember exact miles on my GN, but it was fairly new. It was a pleasure to drive to the nationals in the GN coming from New Jersey going through West Virginia’s mountains.75-85 mph Took us 11 hours straight through.
That was just after the 55 MPH limit was lifted. I remember in '86 stopping on I-79 to take a picture of the 1st time seeing a speed limit sign over 55. I-79 (esp. south of Clarksburg) is my favorite stretch of interstate despite rolling my '72 GS @ mile marker 17 northbound on my way back from the '85 Nationals & hitting a deer southbound south of Morgantown in '87 or 88 with my '69 Sportwagon 400 & my friend's '71 GS 455 on the trailer.
If this is the appropriate thread, I've got some more pics from the 1988 Nationals. Lots of great memories.
There's never an inappropriate thread for old Nationals pics. Some year (@Skyhawk) it'd be nice to put together a display where everyone could bring their old photo albums. Tony Rose & I discussed this years ago but then Covid, etc. I think it'd be wildly popular. For those newer to the Nationals, the pics posted are when the show was held in the campground. The gates between the campground & track were open & it was a hike to get over to the racing but there was also much less racing back then. I don't believe back then the current entrance to the track was there either. All traffic went down the road that's currently used just for the campground.
There was a yellow X in the show field, either 87 or 88 with a crazy animal print interior. Anyone remember that?
I'd love to find a pic of my GSX. The second owner brought it to the nats and raced it in the late 80s. It would of had Virginia plates at the time
