I have a request could someone take a picture of their certification label on their car and post it. I would like to see what size, color and placement of the letters and numbers are so i can see if i can come close with this graphics program I have if i'm successfull i can probably help others out the typewriter ink did not adhere at all to the smooth shiny finish of the repo label,

    Thank you,
    Mark

    Mark,
Hopefully this will help. It blows up pretty good with your graphics software.

There is a WHOLE lot more text on your label than mine (1970). Is that a 70 vs. 72 thing? Mine has the month/year in the top right and VIN at the bottom. Nothing else.

Since this has come back up...
I investigated finding a type face for this.
Nothing in MS Word has the requisite "open 4"

As I described in the other thread, Presitge Elite is pretty close, but there is a serif and the strokes that make up the characters are not of a consistant width.
I have no idea how this typewriter would work on the slick blue sticker.

Those examples look pretty good Nick the closest i have come on the font has the open "4" but the #3 is flat on the top. What i was going to attempt to do is use a Unix based program called Star Office and print it out on clear 3M since the IBM typewriter's ink only stamped and did not leave the ink. Also thanks John for posting your tag there is a lot more info on there than I had expected. It looks like i will have to do some more investigating.

Glad to see other folks are interested in getting this right. I bought the blank tag, but absolutely could not bring myself to replace the original with anything that was not 101% right. (Probably still could not replace it no matter how good the reporduction, although mine looks terrible since i tried to clean it with too strong a solvent :spank: )

In 72, they started putting the weights of the vehicle on that tag. Also, the originals only had adhesive aorund the edge, so I made mine (71) up on the computer and printed it on blue paper, cut out the correct shape of clear on sticker paper and it looks awesome. Would post a pic but the car is jammed in the corner and can' t open the door.

Can't remember what the font I used was, but it was pretty close, although not perfect so this discussion is a good one.

    You're welcome, Mark.
Nick, I didn't know that all the GSs didn't have all this info.... that's news to me!

For those of us who aren't computer geniuses or have laser vision, here's what the individually printed info says:

Upper right corner (mfg. date): 2/72

    GVWR 5270 GAWR FRT 2630 RR 2640

(These figures are the gross vehicle weight rating, and gross axle weight rating for front and rear.)

The VIN is stamped below the universal note, and then "PASSENGER CAR" below that.

Tim, I believe the reason it appears that the adhesive is only around the edges is that there's a clear adhesive overlay that glues the label to the door. I know that some of the reproduction kits I've seen for Chebbies include the transparent overlay.

Yup, and that clear cover makes i very easy to duplicate the whole process.

I tried to get these done in decal form awhile back (12 years ago) and they came out ok not perfect but for $7 they work in a pinch.

If anyone is satisfied with the typewriter font in my example above, I will be happy to do one. Send me your info, a blank tag, and a SASE. PM me if interested.

    Thanks for the offer...

I'm definitely interested Nick, but I need to obtain the decals as well.

    Who makes the 'best' decal?

Maybe you can get a bunch of 'good' labels and offer this service?

    Gee...

Not that I like a little contriversy, :Brow: but isn't this a no no to all the purists, and illegal for those who believe no Skylark part should be used on a GS! I mean, you are (custom) placing a VIN number a door, that may or may not be the original door, and removing another??? Hmmmmmmm, slippery slope.

And why Marco do you want the BEST possible match, so no one could tell what you have done? :blast: Shame on you, I KNOW what you're up to!
