Here are some pics of the wierd 16-10 12 bolt spider gears next to the normal 17-10 eaton gears. The picture of the plate is to show how much narrower the odd ball one is to fit in between the big spider gears. The case is what these gears were in. The odd ball 16-10 gears are on the left in the pics.

Anyone have a clue as to what this thing is? I am not sure but I think it was in a 72 454 Monte Carlo before I got the rear end. I have asked about these before but couldn't take good pics till now. I have also asked on a Chevelle forum and no one had a clue there either.

Only getting one pic to show, the pic of the "bottom" (or RH end ) of the Eaton posi carrier. On the bottom is the last 3 digits of the casting number... 174. That is a 4series 12 bolt car Eaton posi carrier.

From disassembling a lot of 12 bolt car Eaton posi's here's what I've come up with....

    -Oem 2 series Eaton carriers:
18 x 10 (side gear x spider gear tooth count)
This side gear has the sharp thin washer type edsge on it. Very weak brittle design.

-Oem 3 series Eaton carriers: most had 18 x 10, as well.
    A few had 17 x 10 (a lot stronger)

-Oem 4 series Eaton carriers: 17 x 10, so far, all I've disassembled, but there may have been a 16 x 10 version (need to talk with COPO Camaro & Chevelle researchers).

Brute Strength (Moroso) HD 4 series car carrier: 16 X 10.
Versions of this carrier have also been avail from Strange & Randys Ring & Pinion.

The very common 18-10 side gear spider combo's are just one of the weak spots to most stock 12 bolt posi rearends. I always get a chuckle, when a potential customer tells me he's "GOTTA have" a 12 bolt for his strong "street" car, then turns down a pro built rear, & buys an over priced used 12 bolt rear with poor strength axles & used posi with the 18x10 combo. Such bargain hunters usually blow their 12 bolt up, then bad mouth 12 bolts, & run off to the 9" camp... all for a 12 sec car :pp

Hi Roger, When you go to the picture is there a thing on the top of the picture that says 1 of 6 and "next"? Just click on the next to see the next picture. At least thats the way it comes up on my computer.

Would you guess that the 16-10 gears would be stronger than the new eaton 17-10s? I was going to try them but its looking like I am going with a spool now.

I was well into the 11s before the old worn out 12 bolt let go in my car. It never did break a stock axle even on 10.5-29.5 slicks and high 1.5 60 fts. The old 18-10 spiders were the first thing to let go.

Here is a link to the 10 tooth gears if all the other pics don't work.
