I have the same car a 62 special got my trans together and started the brakes one of my drums is shot in the front Napa cant get the drum. Is there another drum that will work it is a stock front end 4 lug? I like your colors. Are you going to leave the dual path tranny or switch over to something else?

    lol...

Im having an issue finding the correct rear brake shoes for this thing. Iv gone to 2 auto parts stores and they had/ordered the shoes i need but they were the wrong ones (way to big) The repair shop i took it to couldnt get the right ones too.

I went to a no name auto parts store and the guy told me he found the right ones but that they were coming out of cali. The guy he spoke over the phone with said his place was the only place he knew of that still carried that part. we will see if its the right part when it comes in.

As for the drums..... im not sure if there is an other compatible drum you could use. maybe a skylark of the same year?

The dp tranny seems to be working great so far so ill keep it for as long as it will last me.

When i first got it my main thing was to make sure the engine and tranny were sound. There good so now my consern is safety ( stoping when i want to stop ) so im doing the brakes myself and going to redue the whole e-brake system with new cable ( for now )

Did you ever find the correct shoes? Have you checked rockauto.com?

I didnt try rockauto but i did find a shop that found the right shoes. They flipped threw a few books and made some calls. they found a warehouse in cali that carried the shoes and placed the order. Took a week for them to come in but they are indeed the right shoes. now im just waiting for the weather to warm up and some snow to melt to install them :)

Cute l'il car and in nice shape too. Reminds me of a really nice, clean black/black/black convertible that sat in front of the apartment complex I lived in back in the late '70s. it was leaking transmission oil, and probably belonged to some little old lady in the complex. I sure wish I had checked into it, even back then. One day it just disappeared. 8(

Being that you originally took the car to a shop to have the brakes done, three things come to mind.

    1. Use a picture reference to verify that the shop installed the springs correctly on the shoes before you take anything apart.

    2. Do one side at a time. That way if you get confused about what goes where, you'll have a mirror image on the other side to verify.

    3. Besides installing the shoes, do you know how to correctly adjust them once installed?

    Thanks for the advice.

Iv picked up the old 62 special work shop manual off ebay. i scanned and enlarged the brake diagrams and studied them. Iv done the brakes on my past 2 cars and remember how to adjust them too. :)

Actually these older drum brakes look alot easier to work on then the ones on my newer cars.

Take lots of photos, that will help. Also everytime I see a good photo of the engine compartment including yours, I save it to my computer. You never know when that one photo will answer a question. When I got my 62 it had been partially disassembled which did not prove to be an issue but I did reference the other photos I saved. Since mine has power brakes and I wanted install a dual master cylinder to go with the disc brakes I installed, the photos helped me to decide if I had enough room for the MC and the proportioning valve I needed.

You got a great little ride, have fun.
