Got my SP3 back from Michaels today, he was surprised hos tiny the ports were in "as cast" form. I mentioned I think its for the guys with a stock or near stock 350, so the port velocity doesn't slow down, or something like thatp Foxes Den, I mentioned your name, Micheal says, "Oh, Guy Fox, yeah I remember him, its been 10 or more years since I did his build"
Nice Mark! Now get us some numbers, you can be the guy that finally puts up numbers and proves this things legit!!!
That tells you how time flies it has been 20 years. I will have to go see him. If you happen to know who Paul Pirnat is they did his motor to, 600 hp 455 back then. I have not seen him for some years now.
:TU: Im gonna try my best! Cant wait to bolt that on and give 'er heck:Brow: Micheal was showing me a good drop base aircleaner assy. I told him I'll probably have to go that route due to hood clearance, we'll see. He said the style with the flat type tops actually hurt power.
All painted Buick red, actually its red caliper paint I had left over from work but looks close enough
Thanks Shawn! Hope it performs as well too:TU: I feel I'll have to buy some pipe plugs, there seems to be quite a few "holes" in the water passagesou:
Can you post what size pipe plugs it will need? I just ordered mine today and forgot to ask o No: thanks!
cool, I'll grab those over the weekend. Also if anyone reading this has already installed this intake, interested in knowing what drop base air cleaner depth I may need to clear my GS hood with a 3" element - May be using the TA thick carb gasket which they say is approx 3/8" - so it'll be that + 1" additional intake height over the SP-1 I have now. Running a Q-jet which has electric choke as well. Shipped yesterday so hopefully I'll be ready to install next weekend!
I took a vacation day today and figured its a good time to start my install of my SP3. All went well, nothing looked weird inside the engine, even took my rockers off the left side, removed 4 pushrods, and inspected the base of the lifters for proper rotation, all was well there too:grin: I was kinda hoping I'd have an excuse to put a roller cam in it Only glitches, and they were minor, was the throttle return bracket needed minor trimming, and the hole in the A/C compressor bracket needed slight elongating where it bolts to the intake, but who runs A/C on a true race car anyway:shock: Hopefully I'll have it all buttoned up by the end of the weekend, Im already checking track programs, see when they have TNT. As far as hood clearance, I SLOWLY lowered the hood, with only the air cleaner stud protruding from the carb, I was very very leary of the stud hitting the hood, so I watched the hood skin from the outside as I lowered the hood, click, click, click, all was good, now to see what happens with the GS set up!
when I get to that point, I'll probably remove 1 or both GS hood grilles so I can see/feel the clearance from outside as the hood closes down.
Got everything done, checked clearance with GS air cleaner, WITH 1/2" carb spacer, no go. Removed foams, still no go Removed spacer from under carb, WITH NO FOAMS on snorkels it seems to just clear. So there yah have it, SP3 with no carb spacer and no foams it just clears, BUT, that's on my car, your results may vary:grin: Took it for a drive, idle seems smoother, low end seems a wee tad softer, but not a lot, once it hits whatever rpm in second, the sumbitch comes alive, BIG difference from the Stage 1, BUT, again, that's on my car. People with stock 350's may not like or get the same results. I do have to tune out a hesitation when I floor it, seems the secondaries need tightening up a tad, no big deal. Next its off to the track!!
Its very common and most likely that its lean , single plane intakes generally require a stronger pump shot and a richer fuel curve altogether. Just something to ponder
