Great Shots brother Bill The "X" on the left (no front license plate) is, in all likelihood, Greg Kravitz's car. An 11 second street car cloned beautifully by Greg based off a GS455. Photo of magazine cover courtesy of Tony Rose shows Greg, AKA The Doctor, putting on a smoke show at Beech Bend. From Dave Tumas..."The cover was from May of 86 but the picture was from the 85 GS nats. That was back when it took almost a year to get the event coverage published."
Ken, I believe Mr. Sloop in post 125 is correct. It was a super low miles car, IIRC, out of Texas at the time. You were part of the convo: http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?th...or-w-14-000-original-miles-on-the-bay.378859/
Super cool pic and story Jim. Looks like you folks elected to go around Cincinnati on I-275 coming back from BG in this photo. You are about to cross the Ohio River on the Combs Hehl bridge and leave Kentucky. Signs welcoming you to Ohio on left and the upcoming Kellogg Avenue exit on right are shown. The journey was half the fun!
Following some “complications” (The initial device did not “function as advertised,” but Kodak Customer Service was great, and sent me a new device…) I have digitized the “GS Nationals” reel of 8mm film. A screen shot attached. I believe this is “Thumper.”
Maybe “just my imagination,” or perhaps “wishful remembering,” but I kinda thought this film was of better quality when I picked up the developed reel from the Fotomat hut in the mall parking lot in 1984-ish… Maybe just “degraded over time…???” (Being a "motion shot" the above is understandably "fuzzy," but few cars are recognizable in the "still frames" of the starting line...)
...one year, back in the "salad days," when arriving in BG on Tuesday was a required part of the "Full Experience," my "un-named co-conspirator" and I took Exit 231 and checked in at the Scottish Inn noon-ish... After settling in, ice chests in the back seat of our GS’s, we drove down Scottsville Rd, only to find our trusty “Barren River Beverages” closed. It was Election Day! (Having grown up in New Orleans, as I have since moved around the country, I find the existence of “liquor laws” still “quaint…” LOL!!!)
It can’t be much worse than rhe VHS racing tapes we used to watch when we were too poor for cable… Patrick
Fudgey wudgey... Just watched the film through the 50's vintage projector, and it is of "expected quality," far better than what I have gotten through the "device..."
What are you using to covert the film, it looks like it just needs to be focused? I have converted much older film than yours and it was very clear. I played the films I had through a vintage projector, the type that the bulb gets to 1000 degrees, and recorded the image on the screen with a digital video camera.
The Kodak Reels thingy is "fixed focus," so I'm kinda stuck there. I was planning to try the same idea with the projector and video camera. I'll keep y'all posted.
I am pleased (and embarrassed...???) to announce that the prior failure was only a result of operator error!!! 8mm footage of the 1986 GS Nationals can be found at:
Here's a picture of Duane's Round 3 HEMI/STAGE1 GSX running in the Stock Appearing Class at the Nationals in the mid 90'S turning an 11:40 ET on this particular run. Which held the record for several years. It would regularly take a first or second place in the GSX show class on Friday, and then race in the stock appearing class on Saturday . It ended up running a best of 11:20 ET before going into storage. Time to get it back in action ?
