Dad just had a guy install a new petrinox in his 425. After getting it finally running, the mechanic said it didn't run properly. Dad drove it and it backfired and had a severe miss at high rpm. You also had to put the key in the run position for a few seconds before it would start. Pulled it out and installed points back in. I have installed an older unit in a 425. It was the 2 piece and the dist. had to be pulled. It still runs great and no BS about having to leave the key on for a few seconds like this new type. What's up with it???
I have too, but never understood it because the old ones I had worked so well. But, this new thing is totally different.
pertronix I have several GM cars running happily with the one-piece, Lobe-sensing Igniter. Did your Dad have the compatable coil Installed too? Some need a 3 ohm others a 1.5 ohm. I think Igniter II calls for the low ohm job. Also check the input voltage. Points type ignition starts on 12v then goes to 6-8v in the run position. this is by a special resistance wire. The pertronix runs best on 12v all the time. When I got my first Igniter the Instructions weren't clear, the unit installs where the condensor used to sit not where the points were. Good Luck!
I have encountered the above described situation--Old style Pertronix--no sweat. New style-- No function! Or at least, very poor function. I even tried the 12 volts direct thing, and it was no dice. I think maybe Pertronix has a Q.C. problem, NO?
Glad to hear that the problem could be in the product and not in the mechanic. I have not tried it again, but will soon. I thought it was the coil resistance at first, so I put a resistor on it and acheived a higher number, but it did not help.
I have one on my 70 GS 455 . I hate it.It takes forever to start.Once running its fine. I have points in my Stage 1 car and HEI in my 72 and they both start great. I wanted the stock dist. look thats why i went with the pertronix. Think i'm going to put the points back in it untill i get the money to get one of ignition mans dist.
I just got a Stock Distributor from Carmen Faso that has been Converted to the New Crane XR-I and recurved. looks like a stock distributor but is electronic and has a built in adjustable rev limiter. it uses a stock looking coil. I'll post again when i have tested it out. it will be a little while because i'm installing a cam , headers, Q jet intake and other parts although maybe i should install it on my engine before making any other changes just to see what kind of difference it makes on the chassis dyno. Bob
I just got a crane xr-i conversion with rev limiter, have not put it in yet but will let you guys know how it works after i put my new engine in. hopefully in about 2 weeks
