i just bought a new pertronix electronic ignition for my 350, i also bought an msd blaster 2 coil. however, they don't work together, the would have trouble starting and running. but when i put on the old coil, it works fine! any suggestions here?

Hey There. Not sure about the MSD coil and Pertronix.I used to use the stock GM coil with my Pertronix..worked fine.Pertronix has a questionable following,I for one had a failure and switched over to an "Ignition Man" converted trigger distributor with a MSD box :TU: In defence of the Pertronix though It did work fine when it was working :puzzled: Hope this helps some.Later,Tony.

UNLESS YOU GET A PERTRONICS 2 U YOU MUST USE A 1.5 OHM COIL ( NON performance or msd ) A stock or flame thrower ( 1.5 ohm ) coil are the only ones to be used with the pertronics system. :puzzled: I am suprized that your car still runs usually the coil fries the unit consider your self lucky ..

Run, RUN, from that Pertronix!! I blew out two of those Ignitor 2 setups.

Return it if you can and get your distributor done by the Dave the IgnitionMan.

    Pertronix And Blaster 2 Coil

I have used the Pertronix pointless system in my stock coil for the last 6
years with the blaster 2 MSD coil and it has worked flawlessly for allthat time.
I will say that when I first put them in I had the same problem as you,in that
the pertronix worked fine with the stock coil but as soon as i put the blaster
2 coil in, the car would not start. After much diaganosis on this problem and
two or three phone call to other Buick guys, a fellow GSX owner told me that
if my stock wiring harness was still in the car that I might want to change
    the wiring harness.
Well... I did what he suggested and replaced the old brittle wiring harness
and "BINGO" ...the car started right up the first time and has worked perfect
ever since! I think I remember his saying something about a built in resistor
in the wiring harness that probably was bad on the old harness and it would
not allow the new Blaster coil to work with it as the new coil had a higher
output . Anyway ..Ujust did what he said and the problem was fixed, at
least for the last 6 years! :3gears:

The stock wiring harness has a built in resistance wire that drops battery voltage to about 7 volts or so. I think the Pertronix likes full battery voltage (LIke a GM HEI). Some guys swear by Pertronix, some guys hate them. At best, they provide no better spark than a good set of points. Advantage?, they are maintenance free, supposedly. I've seen several of my friends stranded by them. If you run the Pertronix, keep a set of points in the glove box, just in case.

I keep forgetting to put a set of points in my glovebox :Dou: but I've had my pertronix for over 10 years and it works great. No complaints here.....Stock coil, but I opened up my plug gap from .035 to .040 for a hotter spark. :Smarty:

The last I've heard from Dave (IgnitionMan), the newer MSD 8202 is inferior. The chrome 8200 is still good though.

so.. if i use the flamethrower coil, will it provide a bigger spark, or will it be as much as my stock one?

    No,
It's a compatibility issue, that's all. Use the recommended coil.
