Recently received my Performer intake and was wondering if there is anything I should do before my motor gets here. It looks like it is basically stock. Maybe a little sanding on the runners just before the intake.

    Thanks, Mike

Figure out the best ways to attach the throttle return spring bracket- I had to saw the end off mine, it was shaped to fit the stock manifold, and didn't fit the Performer to my liking; I removed the end and bent it slightly using a vise as a brake.

Also, you may have to do a little fabbing on the throttle cable bracket- my '74 Riv bracket did not line up correctly and I had a frustrating time putting a good effective bracket together because I hadn't anticipated the problem. Maybe other 455 brackets work fine but my '74 Riv brackets didn't without some extra work I hadn't counted on. You need the bracket to hold the cable 90* to the travel of the throttle to prevent binding- mine was at about 100* or 80* depending on how you look at it, and the tang that prevents the cable bracket from twisting would not fit in the 'tower' provided for it on the Performer.

Not really a big deal, but I hadn't counted on the complications.

Hey Chris, got any pics your cable set-up? I hope to get mine set up today after I get the front cover back on. I'm gonna try to use the brackets that were on the '76 block if I can get away with it.

I looked and I don't. I have pics of that side of the engine, but the bracket is obscured by the breather hose.

Once I wake up, I will sketch out a crummy diagram and post it.

OK, here's what I had to do. Perhaps other brackets are different, the original one I used to do this was from a '74 Riviera's engine.

Note that the new mounting point and the new tang position are very different. The old mounting point, which used to go into the manifold, now hangs out in space on my perfromer 455 intake, as does the old tang position.

The old mounting point is used to hold the two new plates to the old bracket securely, and the bolt goes through all three- old bracket, new mounting point bracket, and new tang position bracket.

Also note that there is ONE bolt holding the original bracket straight. To endure that the original bracket would not twist, I put an oversized washer on the top of the 'new mounting point' that had a flat cut in it, at the right distance from the bracket to form a stop for the bracket.

On closer examination, I can't for the life of me figure out why I needed the bracket in grey. It is completely un-needed.

Is the performer a good street manifold compared to the SP1 or Postons:Do No: ?

I can't answer that, as I purchased it for the purpose of aluminum being a good 35 pounds lighter and it can still be used with the stock air cleaner on the GS setups. I would like to hear the benifits between them also.

    Thanks, Mike
