I am looking to install a little more aggressive exhaust on my 70 GSX. Dont want to run headers, just stick with manifolds. Who makes a quality system that will bolt up in place. I am looking for quality rather than a good deal. It must install in stock position. I have heard of a Club exhaust? The stock exhaust just does not have the attitude note that matches the look of a X. Thanks Dennis
I think the 2.5 inch mandrel bent TA which has the correct cut off on the tips is one of the best. They should be cut parallel to the ground. Torque Tech also has such a set but the ends are not correct. When combined with the 20 inch Dynomax Walker and a Dr Gas x pipe, it is a nice system. That muffler flowed the best and was the quietest in the only head to head test I have seen. I have installed several sets of those mufflers and being the quietest does NOT mean they are quiet. Without the x pipe I think they are too loud. Since Flowmasters are even louder I would not consider them myself. Search in this Board and you will see we have discussed this issue many times.
EX Yes I was planning on the Gessler treatment to the manifolds. Dynomax over Flow master would be the choice for a quieter car, Maybe when I was younger I would opt to go with the loud attention getter mufflers. Thanks guys Bye the way, what x pipe works best with the TA system and where do I get it?
Dr Gas has a website and I ordered it direct from them. Jim Weise recommends that brand . We had a thread earlier and the overwelming number of Board members advocated Dr Gas. I run the set up I described and am putting it on our new X project.
Hi guys, anyone out there ever hear a 455 with a 1 chamber flowmaster?? I've got the long tubes bought getting a H-pipe and was considering the two chamber flowmasters but recently told to go with the one chamber flowmasters instead. Or do any of you know where I could find a sound clip of the 1 chambers?? Thanks Gerald
I am not sure of the intent of your proposed change . In general I recall the tests show the longer the case muffler the better the flow. The shorter case in general hurts flow and increases noise. That is just the opposite of what I would want. If you are looking for the better flowing and quieter muffler that might be Walker Dynomax. See the following head to head test: http://www.boyleworks.com/ta400/psp/exhaust2.html
Dennis, Be aware that everything recommended in this thread is most definitely not a direct bolt on. The TA system would be the closest, but even they recommend an "H" pipe to be installed between the head pipes. We average about 4/5 hours labor to install a complete X pipe system on a GS... to do it nice.. fit, tack weld, remove the front section with the X, tig weld, and then re-install and "Tweek" it in, so everything is "just so". Keep in mind that is in the shop, with the hoist, welders and folks who have put more than a couple on. I just want to caution you against getting your hopes up too high that you can just buy something and quick bolt it on.. won't happen.. not if you want it to fit as good as it can. I reccomend that you find a local muffler shop with experience putting on custom exhausts on cars like yours, and look for pictures on the walls.. custom exhaust guys are good about taking pics, and displaying them. Then use the TA or Torque Tech 2.5 inch pipes off your manifolds, DR GAS x kit, Dynomax long case mufflers (Super Hemi turbo) and TA tailpipes for that correct "factory" look under the bumper. Keep in mind that an X pipe will change the tone of the exhaust. If you want that "nostagic" V-8 exhaust rumble, then don't do the X, because it will go away, as a function of the X pipe. If the motor has a stock cam, it won't matter, as it won't have a lope in it anyways.. But I have built several cars with our Level 1 230/240 cam in it, and with an H system, you can hear the cam lope, with the X, it's almost non-existant, even at a low idle speed. Good luck, JW
Dave.. nice exhaust and underbody.. Now, pull that driveshaft and paint it.. your killin' me over here.. uzzled: JW
X pipe Yes Jim is gatherd that thier would be much fab work involved. I agree with the drop it off and let the pros do it. More times that not I wished I would of shelled out the dough to have it done by a pro. Dennis
I have not installed a 3 inch system. I have installed the 2.5 inch. Even from on of the custom Bucik vendors it is a snug fit. I have had friend say the 3 inch was too tight and he would go to 2.5 next time. I saw a test that suggests the 3 inch is louder than the 2.5 and provides no perfrmance gain unless you are running a 500 hp or more engine.( Plus it costs more for too tight a fit and more noise.) Since I think stock might have been 2 inch, it is more obvious that it is not stock just by looking at the tips. As for the x pipe JW is correct , it changes the tone. I like it better myself. It is still not quiet and best of all suppresses the drone so often felt at about 45 mph. Tests report a measurable gain in hp of 5-20 depending on the application.
ONE OF THE NEXT THINGS TO DO IS A NEW DRIVESHAFT HAD TO USE A DIFFERENT SHAFT WHEN I PUT IN THE 200R4 . IT HAS A GOOD VIBRATION IN 3RD UNDER FULL THROTTLE .OUT OF BALANCE? I GOT THE X SYSTEM FROM THE GSCA.
I don't currently have it, but prob have it this spring. From lurking/talking to the folks on the Pontiac board, it's readily adjustable to various exhaust configurations.
