Found a '72 Estate Wagon that's been in storage since 1999 and it's in great shape except for the mold that covers the entire interior - seats/dash/door panels/etc. Can mold ever be completely eliminated and if so, what's a realistic cost to have it done? Is it safe to assume that with that much mold all non vinyl(fabric and carpet) areas will need to be replaced? Since moisture probably caused the mold would the electric windows/door locks/etc be salvagable?(No battery in or near the car to check it out)
I would not have any hope of saving any of the non-vinyl parts. I would expect the electrical parts to still be OK.
The best remedy for mold is several days in the hot sun. But that option in Upsate NY is now about 7 months away unless you believe in miracles. :ball:
That's the truth, Dave. If I found this while I lived in FL it would be in my garage now. If cold killed mold I'd be in business!
I would be surprised if the mold affected anything inside the car. A gallon of hot water and some simple green in a bucket ought to do the trick. Get a piece of bath towel and a scrub brush and go to town. It should just wipe off easily. Any old car interior locked in a garage for years molds up.
I would gut the interior and clean every surface you can get to, front side and back side. I would replace the seat foam, carpet, and padding under the carpet. Scrub the metal with bleach solution to kill andy spores that might be present. You don't want mold growing where you cant see it. Wear a good respirator or mask. Mold can cause some serious health problems if your not careful.
