    All:

It seems over the years of talking with people, upgrading the rearend is not typically for the do it yourselfer.

    Is this true?

My brother and I swapped gears in his Fox Mustang with great success. Should I consider converting my GS to Posi and say 3.42 gears myself?

I know the 70 rearend is not as strong as the 71-72 pieces. Should I just find a new 71-72 rear-end that is already finished?

If so, what are they worth today?

I'd say a rebuilt 8.5 posi rear with 3 series gears is worth at least 1k.....but you can find them for less sometimes. I'm not sure the 8.5's are significantly stronger than the 68-70 8.2's, but they sure are cheaper to build and easier to find parts for. For that alone, I'd start with the 8.5. Check with Ken at Everyday Performance, he often has rebuilt units with good gearing ready to go for reasonable money. He goes by TechG8 here on the board.

TA sells a 3.42 ring and pinion set for the 8.2 for around $500.00

There is a lot of confusion about the Buick 8.2 10 bolt. The 68-70 8.2 is NOT the same as the 64-67 BOP 8.2 rears. You cannot use the earlier parts in the 68-70 rear. My first call would be to Jim on this board, screen name Monzaz. I believe he has a way to fit a Posi into the 68-70 8.2, and there was a run of gears made awhile back, not sure of the availability. This is Jim's site, www.jdrace.com

FabCraft was supplying some nice aftermarket gears for the 68-70 Skylark/GS rears. They are currently sold out,but have plans in making another run before the end of the year. They were offering 3/42 and 3:64,but they only plan on making another run of 3:42's for now. The other venders that advertise these gears, are also sold out,as they were getting them from FabCraft. The posi units are not much of a problem, but right now there are no aftermarket gears available.
if you have access to a 71-72 8.5" 10-bolt housing,I would suggest building that,as there is an abundance of parts available for those, and they are a stout rear, that can handle plenty of abuse. If you want a complete, rebuilt rear,I have them, any ratio you want, for $1200.00 plus the freight. A rear like that would have an Eaton posi,Motive gears, and Timken bearings & seals.Assembled, filled with fluid & additive, and ready to run.

Do I need a dock for delivery?

Do you need to provide a core?

How do I estimate shipping to 60585?

Are any parts warrantied? My car is a stock 350/350 GS.

I normally ship these dock to dock, for the best rate, but if you are not near one,or you have a business that has means of unloading it,I can ship there. I normally use ABF Freight System for my freight shipments.
If you were local,I would use your core, and build that, but I have cores here. These are nice rust-free cores from the southwest,so they will look great in anything they go in.
There is an ABF dock in Oswego. How far is that from you? It would cost $200.00 to ship it to that terminal.

    Brian. Oswego is very close.

Let me chew on it a bit and I'll let you know. I'm not certain what gear ratio I really should pick at this point. I thought 3.42 simply because that is what my 71 was born with.

the answer is ALWAYS 3.42...........unless it's a racecar!

For the 8.5" 10-bolt,your ratio selection is 3:08,3:23,3:42,3:73,3:90,and steeper stuff after that.

X2 3.42 is the deepest I'd go without an overdrive if you drive it on the highway much.
3.08 and 3.23 are great gears also for the street:pp
