1238973 shows as a 1971 - 1972 buick with 455 engine. it doesnt say what body but i think it is big car as listed on the AACA site. i feel certain it will not fit a GS. henry

korrie so 1238973 is 71-72 GS 455 ? :Do No: oddly, my books dont say what body its for. most any other part in the book, it makes it very clear on which body a part is for. this is the master parts catalog effective july 1971. i ran into the same problem looking up shroud 1238972 the other day for brett. all other shrouds, no problem for me to id. thanks henry

    Korrie

So, your first posting mentioned it to be for a GS 455.
The second for a GS 350.
I would think that it is for a 350 from the depth of the part. But that is why I'm asking.
So clearly for a GS 350?
    Thanks!

    Oh yeah. :ball:

troy the second post was about the 1238972 shroud which is 350. what corrie told you is right. his different book is more clear than mine. 973 is bb 71-72 GS. we are now talkng about two different shrouds. sorry, maybe i shouldnt have brought the other one into the conversation. corrie, thanks for making that clear for me, i wasnt sure until you said something. thanks henry

troy , what is the depth front to back at the top ? 350 is much deeper than 455 in 1970. i think that holds true for other years. henry

    I will verify tonight.

Ok, I didn't look closely enough to the numbers. Thanks for the help Henry. I still have it forsale if anyone wants it.
    Troy

Tonight I will make absolute sure of the part number on the plastic, not the tag.

    Depth

    Henry,
All of this is a guesstimate So, If I can use a general measurement, my current "original" shroud is 3.5-4"
The NOS shroud I bought is around 7-8 inches.
I will grab the calipers tonight after Volleyball and thirst quenching time and measure the 2 parts and update this later tonight.
Thanks for all of the help!!!!!!

    Oh no!!!

Are you saying the (350) 1238972 shroud was mis-labeled with a (455) 1238973 decal on the box...Gee, that would be very easy for a vendor to make that mistake, send a bunch to GM, get sent all over the place before they figured it out. Then GM couldn't account for all the mis-labeled parts, and anyone saving them for a rainy day.....BAM:Dou: :blast: :blast:

Now you know why GM put those part #'s on the parts... When it is NOS, I guess you always must have the part # verified that is on the part itself!!! :Dou: :af: :Do No:

I did a double check of part number.

I did get to the part to check the number 1238973 on the paper tag attached to it, 1238973 molded into the plastic part. The part number is the correct part for a 455 as Korrie and Henry have shown us. I have to say my minds eye wasn't the best when I was estimating the depth difference of the 2 parts. My original has a depth from back of radiator to the closest point to engine of 4 3/8 the NOS part same measurement (not installed of course) is 6 5/16. I can't make it fit. Some one needs to buy this part.

I agree it should fit a 71 GS...

But not correct. I have two different assemby manuals, 1 early and the other late in the 71 model year. Both show 1234484.:Smarty:

    Correct for 72 though!:beer

    thepartsman Back Ordered Again ?

The part number 1238973 is correct for
    all 1971 & 1972 w/ 455.
The book I'm looking at was updated/printed April 1976.
1238973 was discontinued may of 1991.
GM never showed a part number change.
1234484 doesn't show up in the current history book.
The picking tag on the part shows 4/7/81.
Most part numbers/parts do not change numbers unless it is updated to fit a newer model or a manufacturing change or in this case another big block shroud that would fit the 71-72 models. Also assembly manuals sometimes use casting numbers for illustrations at time of printing. When the actual parts catalog comes out the number is different. And number changes do not go backwards in sequence unless there is a surplus of another part that would fit. Case in point,1972 GS grilles discontinued and change numbers to the Skylark grille in 6/86.The seller says the 1238973 is stamped in the part. Sounds like the real deal.
Maybe some of this helps in your decision...........:TU:

  20. tdacton,

I just checked out your auction and didn't notice ribs on the outer perimeter of the circle. I thought no ribs was a 70 only shroud. I think (thought) 71/72 have ribs. Then again, I'm learning everyday.
